UPDATE: Why I’m NOT Retiring (Yet)…
As many of you know, I was set to retire from Seattle Parks and Recreation on April 29, 2026… after 29 years.
That’s changing.
I’m pushing my retirement back at least one year and will do the full 30.
Here’s why:
Last year, I had a fall off a scooter and seriously damaged my teeth. I didn’t make a big deal about it publicly, but if you’ve seen me in person, you may have noticed my smile looks a little different. The reality is, those teeth are no longer viable.
So I’m getting a full arch dental implant (an “All-on-6” for those familiar). It’s a long-term solution, about a 5 to 8 month process… and yes, it is expensive.
The decision came down to this:
Why would I pay for something like that out of my pension when I can cover it with a paycheck?
So I’m staying on the job a little longer.
I am ready to retire. I have been preparing for this for years:
✔️ Paid off debt
✔️ Improved my credit
✔️ Lost weight
✔️ Reversed diabetes
✔️ Got myself mentally, physically, and spiritually ready
I was counting down the days for all these years... so, I am in my feelings about not retiring this month.
At the same time, I recognize that I am blessed to even have this option.
And I am still smiling — regardless. Because that’s who I am. This is not about appearances; it is about health and making smart, long-term decisions.
I will also be documenting this dental journey in case it helps someone else.
Bottom line:
I am not retiring this month… but it is still coming.
And when I do?
It will be cruises, travel, and not sleeping in my own bed at least once every month.
If you have been following my retirement journey, it's not over... stay tuned.
If you are thinking about your own, start preparing now.
