Food Detectives Workshop

Food Detectives Workshop Empowering students with skills to make informed choices when it comes to food.

Seattle food entrepreneur Kurt Beecher Dammeier has long been concerned about the growing number of food additives in the food supply, as well as the misleading food packaging that was attracting his own children. To effect change, in 2006, he founded the Beecher’s Flagship Foundation, aiming to support youth food education programs that teach children how to know what’s in the foods they eat so t

hey are empowered to make healthier food choices for life. Disappointed by the lack of comprehensive food education and cooking programs for youth in the schools, Kurt decided that, to fill the void, the Foundation would develop its own program. With input by experts at Washington State University, in 2006, the very first Pure Food Kids Workshop was held – and the educational community latched on. A learning-standards-based curricula free to schools, the Workshop’s effectiveness and fun-factor led to high-demand by public and private schools. With a focus on reaching elementary students with marketing, label reading, and cooking education, in 2014, the initiative changed its name to Pure Food Kids Foundation, and continues to support hundreds of schools in the Seattle and New York City metro areas with its Pure Food Kids Workshop.

We blindfolded our Food Detective Lana and asked her to guess the main ingredients in one of her favorite snacks — and the results were eye opening. 🕵️

Hot Cheetos tastes like cheese 🧀 and chili 🌶️, but the top ingredients? Enriched cornmeal, vegetable oil, and corn maltodextrin.

Turns out what we taste and what's actually in our food are two very different things. The front of the package sells the flavor. The ingredients list tells the truth. 🔎

Would you have guessed correctly? Sound off in the comments!

Be still our hearts. 🥹

These handwritten notes are from our Food Detectives in training and we couldn't keep them to ourselves. Seeing kids walk away curious, confident, and excited about what they eat is exactly why we do this. 🕵️🍎

Wendy Dubrow, certified educator, author, and founder of ReRoute Learning, believes the best way to get kids invested in food is through empowerment, not pressure. 🥦

When kids feel like they have a choice in what goes on their plate, they become more curious, more willing to try, and more invested in what ends up on the table.

And it doesn't have to be complicated. Parents can start with something as simple as asking “Should we get broccoli or sweet potatoes for dinner?” at the grocery store. Small choices like that can make all the difference. 🍠

It's okay if they don't love it the first time. Or the second. But every taste is a step toward becoming a more curious, confident eater. 🕵️

Sugar isn't the enemy. But there's a lot to learn about it. 🍬🕵️

Swipe through to find out why we crave it in the first place, to the difference between glucose and fructose, to the simple ways to enjoy it without overdoing it.

The more you know about what's in your food, the better choices you can make.

In Part 1 of our Grocery Store Challenge, our Food Detectives spotted foods marketed directly at kids. Now it's time for Part 2 — and this time, the target is adults. 🕵️

While kid-focused marketing leans on bright colors and cartoon characters, adult food marketing has a different approach. Think clean, minimal packaging and a list of health claims designed to make you feel good about what you're putting in your cart. But does simple and natural-looking actually mean healthier?

Always flip the box. The front is marketing. The back is the truth.

Can you spot these tricks next time you're at the grocery store? Drop the products you think are aimed at adults in the comments below!

Social media now shapes what we crave, what we buy, and what grocery stores decide to stock. Grocery stores, restaurant chains, and big food companies are paying close attention to what's trending — and adjusting fast. 🕵️

That's not a bad thing. It actually shows us something powerful — when consumer behavior shifts, the food system shifts with it.

Food Detectives teaches kids to understand that power and use it for good. Because when they learn how the food system works, they can help change it. 🍎

We absolutely love Deb O’Brien’s approach at Young Chefs Academy Covington 💛

She invites kids to explore new ingredients with curiosity, not pressure, and empowers them to choose which flavors they want to experiment with. When kids feel ownership in the kitchen, confidence follows.

Giving them the freedom to explore makes all the difference.
