As we approach the end of the year, the holidays are a good time to take some time to reflect and think about the coming new year.
2022 has been a year of growth and learning for the Tax Campaign: after a couple years of reduced, online-only services due to COVID-19, we returned to a more robust service model in January of this year, serving over 7000 community members with free tax assistance across 12 sites and our virtual tax platform. This was accomplished through the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, site managers, and internal program staff, and through generous support from the IRS and the City of Seattle. We are truly grateful to everyone whose collective effort has helped to revitalize the program, and who held strong spirits of service in the wake of the pandemic. Tax season can be a confusing and stressful part of the year for many folks in our community, and many would likely have chosen not to file or paid to file their return without this program. Our volunteers ensure thousands of dollars in refunds and tax credits are deposited directly into the pockets of our friends and neighbors in King County-- money for food, clothes, housing, toys, car maintenance, vet bills, and everything else. These refunds add up to millions of dollars that our volunteers return to local communities each year.
We plan to keep growing in 2023. We've added several tax sites across King County and will continue to offer virtual tax assistance. Next year will be an important year for Washingtonians, as the Working Families Tax Credit will be rolling out to bring direct cash payments of up to $1,200 to low-income families and individuals. United Way of King County is committed to helping as many community members as possible receive this credit, along with their refunds.
We are still actively recruiting volunteers for next season. Will you join us?
