Madison Park Greenways

Madison Park Greenways We plan for safe and healthy streets connecting us to the places we use, whether we walk, drive, ride a bike, push a stroller, or use a wheel chair.

Seattle is building a network of neighborhood greenways. They are safer, calmer residential streets for you, your family, neighbors and customers. On streets with low car volumes and speeds a greenway can:

· Improve safety

· Help people cross busy streets

· Discourage cut-through traffic

· Protect the residential character of our neighborhoods

· Keep s

peeds low

· Get people to where they want to go like parks, schools, shops and restaurants

Neighborhood Greenways are not car free zones, do not add bike lanes and there are minimal if any on-street parking impacts. Unfortunately, the program does not include funding to build new sidewalks at this time, but sidewalk and pavement repairs are usually part of the Neighborhood Greenway treatment. Come see our first Neighborhood Greenway on 37th Ave E, just north of E Madison St.

Its been a good year.
1. Madison/McGilvra intersection project nearly finished, just a wee bit more paint and posts to make it safer to walk in our core business district, and to McGilvra Elementary from points south of E Madison St. $700k project.
2. E Harrison St traffic calming done thanks to a grant from Denny Blaine Neighbors for Safer Streets. Should mean less top end speeding in front of The Bush School.
3. Arboretum Trail opened a new all ages and abilities walking and biking connection from Madison Court to Foster Island.
Nearby in Montlake:
1. The safe bike connection on 24th Ave E from the East Montlake neighborhood to the Shelby-Hamlin loop is finished and operational, done to a super high degree of protection.
2. The Lake WA Loop Greenway segment on 26th Ave E north of Boyer received well formed speed humps to deter speeding and cut-through traffic.
3. The SR520 trail to Bellevue opened and it is amazing and safe.
4. The Central Seattle Greenway connection across Interaken Park to Montlake is under construction now, addressing a missing link in our network.
Next:
Our work is far from done. The Arboretum Neighbors for Safer Streets group was denied their matching grant for walking safety improvements along 26th Ave E and were told by SDOT that they are on the Greenway implementation plan, but with no definite year for work to begin. The Arboretum group is reforming to find their voice to get more action.

SW corner of Madison@McGilvra intersection. Far more accessible and welcoming for people walking. Expanded bulb makes it easier for people driving to see people waiting to cross the street. Big landing pad provides space for people with bikes to stop out of traffic while they figure out their next move, which often will simply be to wait for a break in traffic.

And...Starbucks has a new curb bulb, making crossing the street for a cup of coffee safer and more comfortable for all. Gone are the notchs around the tree Wells. Sidewalk was simply moved over a bit to avoid damaging the roots of protected trees. Also, curb extension in second pic shows how curb was moved out without tree root damage, while enlarging the water infiltration area.
