Licton Springs Neighborhood

Licton Springs Neighborhood Created and maintained for neighbors and parties interested in the Licton Springs Neighborhood of Seattle. Jensen bough the site and built a spa.

This page is hosted by the Licton Springs Community Council. Licton Springs takes its name from Liq'tid (LEEK-teed) or Licton, the Lushootseed (Whulshootseed) Coast Salish word for the reddish mud of the springs. The springs was once a healing center for Native Americans, who constructed sweat lodges and bathed in the mineral waters of the springs. The Dkhw’Duw’Absh, People of the Inside and Xacua

bš, People of the Large Lake, Lushootseed (Skagit-Nisqually) Coast Salish native people had used the springs area as a spiritual health spa since the area was populated after the last glacial period (c. 8,000 BCE—10,000 years ago). In the 1850s, the Dkhw’Duw’Absh and Xacuabš became the Duwamish tribe of today. After pioneer David Denny built a cabin near the springs in 1870, hundreds of settlers drove for miles to immerse themselves in the spring water and in the mud. The springs site remained a picnic area until 1935, when E.A. Then thousands flocked to the springs to take the waters and dunk in the thermal baths. In 1960 Seattle voters approved the site as a park, and the City bought the springs in 1961. (from City of Seattle and Wikipedia)

In our meeting on Wednesday, Ann Forrest, a volunteer for the Office of Emergency Management, proposed establishing an Emergency Hub in the Licton Springs neighborhood. Anyone looking to learn more about Emergency Hubs can visit their table at the Northwest corner of Maple Leaf Reservoir Park by the bathrooms.

Our next Licton Springs Community Council monthly meeting is tomorrow - Wednesday, February 19 at 6:30pm via Zoom. We'll be conducting usual business, but the most exciting item on tomorrow's agenda is planning for the North Aurora Community Planning study to start up again.

This study was in progress at the City of Seattle's Office of Planning & Community Development, but had been paused indefinitely until our neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods were successful in petitioning Seattle City Council to include funding for it in the budget they passed last year. Now we need to decide as a community how we can best contribute to the effort, which will have a major impact on how Aurora and the surrounding area develop in years to come. Carlo Alcantara from the Aurora Reimagined Coalition will be joining us for this discussion. Please join us!
