Our drama-filled program features works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Bernstein all celebrating one of the greatest love stories of all time, alongside the Washington premiere of a new work by famed Peruvian composer Jimmy López Bellido*, “Loud”. Guest soloist Eduardo Rios, Assistant Concermaster of the Seattle Symphony, solos with the orchestra on Piazzolla. Do not miss this thrilling concert!

Marrowstone Music Festival faculty Lauren Roth, violin, Concertmaster of the Tucson Symphony, wants you to apply to Marrowstone!

Violinists have an amazing opportunity to study under the tutelage of Lauren, as well as Assistant Concertmaster with the Seattle Symphony, Eduardo Rios in sectionals, chamber music settings, and more.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: John Turman, French Horn

John Turman joined the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Seattle Opera in 2015 as third horn. Mr. Turman was awarded the position of principal horn of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in the spring of 2015. During the 2013-2014 season, Mr. Turman performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as acting third horn. In addition to his orchestral playing, Mr. Turman is a dedicated chamber musician, music educator, and producer. He is a founding member of the Noctua Wind Quintet. In 2012, Noctua was the recipient of the Coleman-Sanderson grand prize for winds at the Coleman Competition and received the bronze medal at the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition.
Mr. Turman was welcomed to the faculty at the University of Washington School of Music in 2021 as Professor of Horn. During the pandemic, Mr. Turman launched an educational media company, Horn Hippie Media LLC, as well as a YouTube channel where he posts educational content and resources for musicians. He is also the creator, head writer, and host of the Seattle Symphony’s early education program “Tiny Tots” and its online companion show “Tiny Clips” which won Mr. Turman the Ford Foundation Musician Award for Excellence in Community Service in 2021. Originally from Austin Texas, Mr. Turman began to play music at age seven. Mr. Turman received his degree in Horn Performance from Rice University in 2015 where he studied with William VerMeulen. Mr. Turman plays on handcrafted instruments made by the Canadian horn maker Keith Berg.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Matthew Kocmieroski, percussion - Pacific Northwest Ballet

Matthew Kocmieroski is currently Principal percussionist of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, and has also performed with the Seattle Opera, the Martha Graham Dance Company, the Bolshoi Ballet, and the Mariinsky Orchestra, as well as diverse popular acts such as Gladys Knight and the Pips, David Byrne, Perry Como and “Mr” Fred Rogers.

In chamber music, he served as Artistic Director and percussionist of the New Performance Group, was a longtime member of the Composers and Improvisers Orchestra and is a founding member of Pacific Rims Percussion Quartet. He often appeared with the Seattle Chamber Players, and at festivals including the Seattle Chamber Music Society Festival, the Washington Square Music Festival, and Internationally at the Bergen, Moscow Autumn, and Warsaw Autumn festivals and has a long association with Cornish College of the Arts, and the Seattle Youth Symphony.

One of his greatest satisfactions is his work with numerous composers including John Luther Adams, John Cage, George Crumb, Lou Harrison, Alan Hovhaness, and Toru Takemitsu. He may be heard on many recordings of solo, chamber, and orchestral music as well as Major and Independent motion picture, television, and video game soundtracks.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Emil Khudyev, clarinet - Seattle Symphony

As an internationally recognized pedagogue, Emil Khudyev has appealed worldwide attention as one of the foremost teachers of clarinet in the United States. Prior to joining the Seattle Symphony, clarinetist Emil Khudyev has performed with orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Khudyev was appointed as instructor of clarinet at the Interlochen Arts Academy in 2014. Prior to this position, he served as the acting Associate Principal, Second and E-flat Clarinet of the Kansas City Symphony. 

Born in Turkmenistan, Khudyev began his musical training under the auspices of the Moscow Conservatory, and, at age 7, was admitted to the Special Music School of Turkmenistan. Khudyev attended Interlochen Arts Academy where he studied with Nathan Williams, received his bachelor’s degree in Clarinet Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Franklin Cohen and his master’s degree at the Yale School of Music with clarinetist David Shifrin. Khudyev also studied at the Colburn Conservatory for his Artist Diploma under the legendary Yehuda Gilad. He has attended Tanglewood Music Festival, the Colorado College Music Festival and the Sarasota Music Festival.

As a teacher Khudyev’s students have won many of the world’s top prizes, including the Vandoren Competition, Yamaha International Competition, MTNA, Young Arts, International Clarinet Associations, and many others. They have been featured numerous times on NPR’s From the Top. Emil has taught as a guest Artist at University of Southern California, Yale University, Rice University, Northwestern University, University of Michigan, Cleveland Institute of Music and many others. Outside of music Emil spends most of his time with his family. He enjoys playing soccer chess and table tennis.
