In, 1961 Dr. King met a Central District that was 75% Black with 50% Black homeownership and the Union, Cherry, Yesler and Jackson Street corridors lined with Black cultural institutions and thriving Black businesses.

And, in today’s Central District?

From Jim Crow to gentrification, from redlining to displacement, Black homeownership in Martin Luther King Jr. County has steadily declined to 28%, and the Black population in the Central District is down to 15%.

As we take this day to reflect and recommit, ACLT remains dedicated charting a new course from harm to repair. By developing permanently affordable housing and supporting Black-owned businesses we can preserve the Central District as a place where Black legacy, culture, belonging and prosperity can endure for generations.

We look forward to building with you, today and beyond.
