Seattle University Professionals Without Borders

Seattle University Professionals Without Borders Empowering Seattle University Students, Staff & Faculty to lead and participate in sustainable service projects. PWOB is 100% volunteer run organization.

Seattle University Professionals Without Borders works hand in hand with our global partners to complete sustainable infrastructure projects that assist in improving the lives of many people. SU students are offered opportunities to put their liberal arts education to use by volunteering on these international service projects. With Jesuit values at the forefront of each PWOB project, students lea

rn additional skills to help in their professional formation, empowering them to be leaders for a just and humane world. Our story began in December 2007 when a group of Seattle University Facilities employees were asked to assist on a service project in Nicaragua. The concept was simple, connect service minded students with skilled trades people to help people in need. PWOB has traveled with students to serve on projects such as:
• Improving water pressure for a hospital in rural Zambia. The increase in available water allowed the hospital to open a natal unit and operating theater.
• Completion of a medical clinic and nurses quarters that serves 14,000 people in Chipembele, Zambia
• Installation of borehole pump, classroom renovation, installation of electrical pole and new fence at Chikuni Girls School in Zambia.
• Installation of a rainwater catchment system, renovation of the volunteer lodging building, construction of a greenhouse and chicken coop, construction of additional bathrooms in the dorms, installation of kitchen cabinets and design and installation of acoustic panels in the dining hall at Liberty Children’s Home in Ladyville, Belize.
• Construction of a retaining wall and sidewalks and re-painting the chapel at Nuestros Pequenos Hermano’s children’s home in Nicaragua.

Over the past four years, I’ve spent my spring breaks in Belize at Liberty Children’s Home with SU PWOB, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. This was my fourth trip. Across these trips, I’ve taken on all kinds of hands-on work: painting and staining, learning how to fix toilets and do electrical tasks, and so much more. But beyond the work, the most meaningful part has been the relationships. I’ve had the chance to play with the kids and build connections, some I’ve been lucky enough to return to year after year, and others I only had the privilege of meeting once. As one of the kids said right before we left, “It’s easy to come to Liberty, but it’s hard to leave.”

Another successful trip! Thank you Liberty Children's Home! We love you! See you next year!

Today was our last day at Liberty, and we got a lot done! I helped add supports to a few sinks that were falling off the wall, snaking the drain to the kitchen to clear up the piping, and much more. It was a wonderful experience to be able to help Liberty Children’s Home in any way we could and I look forward to my future involvement at PWOB. Teamwork makes the dream work!!

3/25. Hello!!
I woke up to a tropical rain storm, the rain was warm and beautiful. We couldn’t stain so I had some time to go over and talk to the kids. I ended up playing with the preschoolers all day. We colored, played Uno, then they forced me to push them on the swings until the sun went down! They were the sweetest, and silliest bunch I have ever met.

Today we went to Lamanai, Mayan ruins in the heart of Belize! We took a beautiful boat ride to the site of the ruins and walked around admiring each Mayan temple and learning about their histories from the General. The hike was so peaceful, and after we were done our tour guides had prepared lunch for us. I’m so grateful that I got the opportunity to immerse myself into the Mayan culture today. It was a great day of experiential learning and recuperation from our work at Liberty.

First day actually working was fun & fruitful! After getting the official Liberty tour from Ms Agatha, we started the morning with painting the rocks lining the entrance with colors other than their original bright blue; now they are pink, yellow, teal-green— reminiscent of Easter. Lunch was a delicious chicken & rice with potato salad served by Ms Mary, and we got to work staining the stairs and underbelly of our lodgings afterward, which took most of the afternoon. The iguanas and frogs made their first appearances, as well as the Belizean heat. Sunkissed, we welcomed the night at The Manatee for dinner, whose chicken shish kebabs marked a satisfying end to the first day.
