Seattle University Professionals Without Borders works hand in hand with our global partners to complete sustainable infrastructure projects that assist in improving the lives of many people. SU students are offered opportunities to put their liberal arts education to use by volunteering on these international service projects. With Jesuit values at the forefront of each PWOB project, students lea
rn additional skills to help in their professional formation, empowering them to be leaders for a just and humane world. Our story began in December 2007 when a group of Seattle University Facilities employees were asked to assist on a service project in Nicaragua. The concept was simple, connect service minded students with skilled trades people to help people in need. PWOB has traveled with students to serve on projects such as:
• Improving water pressure for a hospital in rural Zambia. The increase in available water allowed the hospital to open a natal unit and operating theater.
• Completion of a medical clinic and nurses quarters that serves 14,000 people in Chipembele, Zambia
• Installation of borehole pump, classroom renovation, installation of electrical pole and new fence at Chikuni Girls School in Zambia.
• Installation of a rainwater catchment system, renovation of the volunteer lodging building, construction of a greenhouse and chicken coop, construction of additional bathrooms in the dorms, installation of kitchen cabinets and design and installation of acoustic panels in the dining hall at Liberty Children’s Home in Ladyville, Belize.
• Construction of a retaining wall and sidewalks and re-painting the chapel at Nuestros Pequenos Hermano’s children’s home in Nicaragua.
