Pride exists not because equality has been achieved, but because visibility matters and silence will not protect q***r people. The real question is not why Pride is still necessary, but how anyone that's paying attention could honestly fail to see that it is. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️⚧️
BREAKING🚨🏳️🌈 Someone asked why we still need Pride in 2026. Here's what happened just in the last 12 months. Read this all the way through.
Pride Month 2025 was one of the most dangerous for LGBTQ+ Americans in recorded history. GLAAD tracked 268 anti-LGBTQ+ incidents in June 2025 alone — a 400% increase from just three years earlier. The year total: 1,042 incidents across 47 states. That includes 76 violent assaults, 22 threats of mass violence, and 15 arson attempts. More than half of all incidents specifically targeted transgender and gender-nonconforming people.
Then there's the legislation. The ACLU is currently tracking over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in U.S. state legislatures in 2026. Hundreds more are targeting trans people specifically — banning healthcare, forcing teachers to out students to their parents, blocking kids from bathrooms and sports, erasing LGBTQ+ books from classrooms. The Supreme Court ruled last June that states CAN ban gender-affirming care for minors — and 27 states now have such bans in place, affecting roughly half of all trans youth in America.
And it's not just the U.S. In May 2026, Ghana's parliament passed a sweeping law that doesn't just criminalize same-sex relationships — it criminalizes identifying as LGBTQ+ at all. Up to three years in prison just for saying who you are. It also creates a legal obligation for citizens to REPORT any LGBTQ+ people they encounter. Senegal doubled prison sentences for same-sex acts just months earlier. Burkina Faso banned same-sex relationships for the first time. Over 60 countries still criminalize being q***r.
Back home: the rainbow crosswalk outside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando — the memorial to 49 people murdered in 2016 — was painted over in the middle of the night in August 2025. No warning. No discussion. The state said it was about "safety." The crosswalk had been there since 2017. It met every federal safety standard. They erased it anyway.
This is why we march. Not because things are perfect somewhere else. Not as a party. But because visibility is still protection, and silence has never once kept q***r people safe. The question isn't why we still need Pride. The question is how anyone could look at this list and ask.
