First Book-Seattle Giving New Books to Children Who Need Them Most in King County Learn more about the honors and awards received by First Book.

First Book works through existing volunteer community programs, corporate and non-profit partners and a variety of literacy efforts to provide a steady stream of new, free or low cost books to elevate educational programming and improve access to reading materials. Unlike any other organization focused on literacy, First Book grants unprecedented access to new books to programs serving children in

need. By providing new books to children in preschools and after-school programs, mentoring and tutoring programs, shelters and day care centers and beyond, First Book provides resources to empower teachers and administrators. With access to high-quality books, educational materials and more, these caring leaders can better teach, plan curriculum and impart a love of learning, elevating the quality of the programs and opportunities available to children in need. Now, nearly 18 years later, First Book has delivered more than 80 million books to programs serving children in need across the United States and Canada.

The White House & U.S. Department of Education are launching a "Read Where You Are" day of action tomorrow, to draw attention to the importance of summer reading.

You can be a part of this day of action by:

1. Spreading the word: Tweet, retweet, post, snap, ‘gram and chat. Use social media and share widely! Make sure to use .

2. Read to the young people in your life and in your community. Take a picture and share it through social media using the hashtag.

3. Visit http://www2.ed.gov/readwhereyouare/index.html to learn more about other ways to keep reading and learning throughout the summer.

Another way to promote summertime reading, help reduce that summer slide AND get free books!

Summer Reading Program at Half Price Books! Kids read during June and July and can earn $5 Bookworm Bucks each month!

My reluctant 6 year old reader just begged to stay up late to read more books to get more minutes. I said she could read some more in her bed. She lamented: "But how will I know how many minutes I read?!?!?"
