Potlatch Fund

Potlatch Fund Native-led 501-c-3 nonprofit organization. Donate here: https://bit.ly/3o21Yj0 Our main push is teaching about philanthropy, fundraising and grant writing.

Potlatch Fund is focused on promoting diversity and addressing inequality by educating foundations about Tribal communities, introducing them to Native nonprofits, and holding funder briefings specific to Indian Country. At the same time we are working with casino Tribes to improve their giving practices and increase their own giving to Native projects and their own communities. Concurrently tribe

s are realizing that they cannot fill all the gaps in their community, and thus we work with Native individuals both on reservations and in metropolitan areas to set up, fund, and manage Native nonprofits. Potlatch Fund has also worked with three cohorts of younger leaders to build a pool of qualified and networked talent to help drive a robust Native nonprofit sector here in the Northwest. We work with Tribal leaderships, Native community, nonprofit leaders and Native artists to bring the idea that, with the help of the money that comes from mainstream philanthropy, they can become the master’s of their own destinies. We also train groups about financial management, governance, strategic planning, media management and how to start up a nonprofit. Each training focuses on removing the barriers that exist to stop Native applicants receiving grants from mainstream foundations. Our trainings tend to be small, they are culturally appropriate and always occur within Native communities. There are other trainers who provide the same kind of material as Potlatch Fund; however no one else travels to Indian Country. We do this because we are painfully aware that even the cost of gas for some of our participants can prove to be an insurmountable barrier. Potlatch Fund also holds several grant programs: InterTribal Canoe Journey, Community Building, Native Arts, we work with Tribes to purchase old growth cedar trees (for cultural purposes) though our Cedar Tree Fund, and we provide mini grants to first time applicants. Our Intertribal Canoe Journey grants, Community Building grants, Mini grants and a number of our Native Arts grants, serve large numbers of individuals. Many of the participants who attend a Potlatch Fund training go on to write a successful application to one of our grant programs. These grants act as a positive reinforcement of skills learned, and can also be leveraged for further funding from their Tribes and other foundations.

This , we celebrate the power of Native-led organizations and communities that continue the tradition of giving, care, and collective responsibility.

Did you know that only 0.25% of philanthropic funding from large foundations goes to Native-led nonprofits? Yet Native communities continue creating powerful impact through relationship, culture, and community-rooted solutions.

At Potlatch Fund, we believe in investing in Native communities and uplifting Indigenous leadership across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. Through the cultural tradition of giving, we support Native-led efforts that strengthen communities today and for future generations. Will you uplift our work by sharing our story or making a donation today?

Wow, what a month April was for Potlatch Fund!

From our Potlatch Makes Possible gathering at the Burke Museum, to attending the Native American Philanthropy Conference and co-hosting Rooted in Kinship alongside Na’ah Illahee Fund, this month was full of storytelling, connection, community care, and gathering in good ways.

We also wrapped up our Winter Gift Cycle, distributing 93 gifts supporting Native individuals, tribes, and organizations across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska.

To close out the month, we gathered with our board here in Seattle to reflect, plan, and continue carrying the work forward together.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who shared space with us this month — artists, gift recipients, partners, vendors, community members, and supporters who continue helping make this work possible.

Potlatch Makes Possible.

Special thanks to Burke Museum, Off the Rez, Na’ah Illahee Fund, Succ2Byou, 4 Little Wings, Ellen Ferguson, Made by Amber Stephens, Kaigani Craft, Tio’s Tacos, and all of the wonderful artists and community members who helped make these gatherings so meaningful.

Thank you all who supported us yesterday with Washington's campaign! We are so grateful to have you in our community!...

🟥 May 5 – National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women ( )

Today we honor and remember our relatives who are missing or have been taken too soon. We stand with families and communities seeking justice, healing, and change.

The red handprint has become a powerful symbol—representing the voices that are no longer heard and the ongoing need for awareness and action.
Together, we raise our voices, remember their stories, and advocate for a safer future.
