NAHJ Pacific Northwest The Official NAHJ Chapter of the Pacific Northwest

At PeriodistasNW, we are dedicated to helping Latino and Hispanic journalists in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho succeed. We became an official chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in 2020, and we are now working to grow our chapter and ensure that Latino stories are represented in the media and that newsrooms reflect the communities they serve.

A long-vacant storefront at 23rd Avenue South and South Jackson Street is set to become Coffee TAB's newest cafe.

The nonprofit runs an eight- to 12-week barista apprenticeship for young people facing foster care, housing instability, and other challenges. All five incoming staff members at the Central District location, including its general manager, completed the program.

Founder Johnathan Tran says he hopes the cafe can become more than a business — including a gathering place and, eventually, a space for student tutoring and homework help.

Today, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists joined with leading journalism organizations to publish a joint statement urging regulators to protect local voices, newsroom diversity, and editorial independence as federal media-ownership rules are reconsidered.

Local newsrooms are shrinking, layoffs are accelerating, and proposed policy changes could further concentrate control over what communities see and hear. Together, we are calling on policymakers and industry leaders to reaffirm the principles that have long defined American broadcasting: localism, diversity, and a free, independent press.
