BLC is grateful for your support in 2024 👏 and we aim to close out the year with a few more contributions to give our clients the gift of stability as we enter 2025! Our GOAL is to raise $10,000 by December 31st. By providing our culturally and linguistically-supportive accommodations and representation, BLC’s legal team helps community members with disabilities – living in poverty – gain a measure of income stability: the first critical step toward stability in housing and medical treatment, and perhaps toward recovery.

When you make a donation to BLC, our attorneys are able to assist courageous clients like Darren. Darren suffers from complex and difficult to treat medical conditions that cause severe disabling symptoms. He came to BLC in December 2022 when he learned his SSI application was denied in 2020. Darren was late filing the appeal because he was unhoused and did not receive the notice in the mail due to his housing situation. BLC helped him file a Request for Reconsideration with good cause for late filing. Darren’s case was later stuck between field offices when neither would accept jurisdiction on his claim. His BLC attorney escalated his case to the Regional Communication Director’s Office so that the proper field office would take jurisdiction and review his appeal. Unfortunately, Darren’s claim was denied again. BLC assisted him with his appeal by reviewing thousands of pages of medical records, submitting a written argument, obtaining supporting materials from his treating providers that clarified a complex medical situation, and arguing in front of an Administrative Law Judge. This year, Darren received a Fully Favorable Decision, his monthly payments began soon after, and SSA awarded him over $35,000 in “back pay” – the total amount of monthly payments he should have been paid from the date he applied. Darren’s case highlights how long and labor intensive each eligibility claim is when one of our attorneys provides full representation of a claimant’s case. Even after two years of intensive work and a successful outcome at hearing, we are still working to complete Darren’s case because SSA is so delayed at every stage of the process.

We are proud to announce that Solid Ground is the recipient of BLC’s 2024 Equity Award. BLC’s legal team had the opportunity to provide valuable information and handouts on our legal services and advocacy at the Seattle Municipal Court’s Community Relief Day on September 27th! As a result, we set up multiple intakes with prospective clients, and connected with 40 other service providers.

Together we laughed, celebrated, and supported our community. 👏

Because of your generosity, we raised $52,569 for BLC clients through our annual comedy fundraiser, LOL 2024, on September 14th. Together, we raised a glass to speeches by our Executive Director, Huy Nguyen, and Equity Award Recipient, Patricia Bowen on behalf of Solid Ground. We learned about the challenges of our clients, the lifeline that is our legal support, and the importance of our community partnerships with insight from our Equal Justice Works Fellow and Attorney, Charla Boley, and dedicated staff from Open Doors for Multicultural Families. Bidding on our Live Auction packages amassed $9,250 for our services, and 34 donors raised their paddles to contribute $12,200 to BLC. THANK YOU.

As part of our LOL fundraising event, we invite you to attend our FREE Webinar on Tues, Sept 10th at Noon PST: Social Security 2024 Regulations and Policy Updates that comes with 1.25 Law & Legal CLE Credit for attorneys. This webinar will explore what the major changes are and how these updates will impact our clients. The changes include In-Kind Support and Maintenance (“ISM”) rules, overpayment related rules such as administrative waivers, recovery rate, and payment plans, and expansion of eligibility to Compacts of Free Association (COFA) applicants. Our webinar will provide citations to regulations, emergency messages, and/or POMS where applicable, and also offer practice tips for helping clients affected by these changes.
