We are sad to lose a member of the Occidental College alumni community. Aubry Davis made huge contributions to our state and will be missed.

Aubrey Davis, a civic giant, who helped found Group Health, secured funding for the downtown bus tunnel, pushed for the lush lid over I-90 on Mercer Island, and invented a no-slip compound still used on house decks around the country, died Sunday.

Chemistry Professor Tetsuo Otsuki lost his brave fight against cancer today at 6 p.m. Since Dr. O's diagnosis a year ago, he fought back with the help of his many friends and former students and was officially in remission last summer. Tragically, his prognosis recently took a turn for the worse. He decided not to pursue further treatment, and came home from the hospital 10 days ago. He died as he wished: under hospice care, in his own bed, with family and friends nearby and his dignity intact. He was 69.

Over the past 25 years, Dr. O has touched the lives of hundreds of Oxy students who found him a demanding but supportive teacher. As one alumna said recently, Dr. O’s organic chemistry class “was one of the most difficult classes I’ve ever taken. But Dr. O made it worth it. He is so dedicated to empowering students. He’s more than a teacher; he’s a confidant, friend, and mentor.”

The Occidental College flag will fly at half-staff tomorrow in his memory. Plans for a celebration of his life here on campus are pending.
