Memorial Day is coming up, which means the start of swimming season!

But before heading to your favorite Seattle-area beach, it’s a good idea to check current water quality conditions. You may have already seen the recent beach closures highlighted by the Seattle Times last week: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/no-swimming-at-4-beaches-with-week-of-sunshine-ahead-in-western-wa/

Navigating beach closures and advisories can be confusing, but there are helpful local resources that provide updates and alerts when water quality is unsafe for recreation.

For lake swimming, sign up for email or text alerts from King County to be notified whenever beaches are closed and reopened: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/WAKING/signup/40264

For saltwater beaches, you can use this map to check for any closures or risks: https://gis.ecology.wa.gov/portal/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=e32edf4767184fd88e4ce2aa367ffd5c

Orcas Can’t Vote, But You Can.

Did you know June is Orca Action Month? We’ll be kicking off Orca Month with our annual Orca Fest on May 31st at KEXP Gathering Space from 11AM - 2PM

Orca Action Month, originally started by Orca Network, brings together researchers, advocates, and orca lovers to raise awareness and take action to protect these incredible animals. In partnership with the Orca Salmon Alliance, it’s grown into a movement to help recover Southern Resident orcas.

This year’s theme, Orcas Can't Vote But You Can, reminds us that the future of these marine species relies on our collective action. When we protect orcas, we protect the future for all of us. 💙

Visit OrcaMonth.com to view other upcoming events, educational resources, and ways to take meaningful action. Together, we can be the catalyst for change.

One of our awesome volunteers, Phil Parisi, was recently featured in King 5 and the NY Post for his incredible underwater robotics work exploring the “shipwreck city” beneath Seattle’s Lake Union. His work helps uncover fascinating maritime history hidden below the surface. 🤿

The use of ROV (remotely operated vehicles) is also essential in pinpointing which sunken vessels are harmless, historic relics and which pose safety and environmental risks. With dedicated funding from the WA State Legislature, the Department of Natural Resources locates and removes dangerous abandoned boats. While funding for the Derelict Vessel Removal Program was threatened this year, Puget Soundkeeper and other environmental advocates protected this important program from facing funding cuts. 🛥️

Learn more about the Shipwreck City Project and the derelict vessel problem by using your favorite browser to search "Shipwreck City King 5" or "Shipwreck City NY Post".

You can also visit the Shipwreck city website at www.shipwreckcity.org.

Another Earth Day to remember 🌎💚

Last weekend, 129 incredible volunteers showed up at Magnuson Park with Puget Soundkeeper to give back to the place we all love. With Mount Rainier shining in the background and smiles all around, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work—removing an amazing 505 pounds of trash from our park and waterways.

Every day is Earth Day, and our awesome volunteers prove that each and every day. Here’s to protecting our Puget Sound for today, tomorrow, and every day thereafter. 🌿✨
