Providing food insecurity, transportation, health & wellness, and assistance services for older adults and adults with disabilities. Established in 1967, Sound Generations is a comprehensive non-profit organization that serves older adults and adults with disabilities in King County. We are Washington State’s largest provider of comprehensive services for aging adults and their loved ones located

in King County. Our mission is to support people on their aging journey through community connections and accessible services. We envision a just society where aging adults and those who care about them can live their best lives. We strive to expand the provision of food security, transportation, health & wellness, and assistance services to underserved and marginalized populations. Our programs and affiliated service sites provide accessible resources and services across King County. We are committed to helping everyone, including low income communities and people of color. We work to ensure people feel included and respected in a community that affirms aging.

Sound Generations proudly works in partnership with dozens of senior centers across King County, offering key programs like EnhanceFitness and Community Dining, and connecting them with aging adults through programs like Hyde Shuttle.

Spotlight on Volunteer Transportation Services (VTS)

In 2025, VTS completed over 7,000 trips, drove over 96,000 miles, and served over 500 clients. A total of 151 volunteer drivers dedicated their time and personal vehicle to providing transportation to essential medical appointments for older adults 60 and over. 69% of riders live alone and rely on the service to access essential medical care.

Volunteer Transportation Services offers a more personalized option for riders who benefit from one-on-one assistance. Our volunteer drivers connect older adults to important community resources with warmth and a smile.

A message from Sound Generations CEO, Jim Wigfall:

After eight deeply meaningful years as chief executive officer of Sound Generations, I have decided to retire at the end of the year.

It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve alongside such a dedicated, compassionate team of colleagues, volunteers and supporters. I am profoundly grateful for your commitment to older adults and the impact you make in our community every day.

During my tenure, I had the chance to celebrate and support the everyday heroes who made good things happen. Sound Generations has more reach now as a $26 million organization compared to $14 million when I started, and we have new programs and impact to show for it.

We added new programs: the Geriatric Regional Assessment Team, the Elder Education Institute, the Health Related Social Needs initiative, and we created the Caregivers Appreciation Event.

We broadened the reach of established programs: The Hyde Shuttle now serves the Eastside. Community Dining is now running at 27 sites. Minor Home Repair is available in more south King County cities. And perhaps my personal favorite – our Meals on Wheels program is sufficiently resourced such that we no longer have a waiting list.

The pandemic years certainly tested all of us. The Sound Generations team met the moment. A great example: our Hyde Shuttle drivers pivoted from passenger transport to and from our Community Dining facilities, to daily home meal delivery for each client. From there, we upgraded our transportation systems to offer same-day and next-day reservations, as part of an overall digitization effort for our community.

The team accomplished all of this while also bringing our organization to a new place of financial stability, paying back the endowment and increasing our investment fund to more than $8 million.

I remain fully committed to Sound Generations and to supporting a thoughtful transition in the months ahead. Our Board of Directors will be identifying a search committee to conduct an expansive search. I’ll be working with our Chief Operating Officer, Lainey Templeton, to ensure we have a smooth transition.

For now, I simply want to say thank you for your partnership and the inspiration you have given me throughout my time here.

Sound Generations joined the Stay Housed Stay Healthy Coalition and scores of advocates at Seattle City Hall last week for public comment on the proposed legislation to ban junk fees charged by landlords, including and especially, pet rent. City Council voted 8-0 in favor! 🎉 This legislation will make a real difference in the lives of older renters on fixed incomes, for whom even a seemingly small hidden monthly fee can tip the balance towards housing insecurity.

📢Next month, the mayor’s office transmits its budget to city council – there will be plenty of opportunities to engage in funding advocacy on behalf of the older and disabled adults we serve.
