We also offer follow-up islet antibody testing for a more predictive look at a child's risk. The DEW-IT research tests children for type 1 diabetes risk. Most children with type 1 diabetes don't have a close family member with the disease, so we offer to screen children at birth to find out who is at risk. The DEW-IT 2 Study was started in 2008 and is funded by state and federal grants. To date, t
hrough DEW-IT 2, we have screened over 13,000 babies in Washington State for genetic risk of developing type 1 diabetes. We offer islet antibody follow-up testing to those kids whose screening results show an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes. This helps us evaluate a child's current risk of developing type 1 diabetes. All follow-up testing can be done at home, at our clinic, or with your own doctor or lab. We also offer education and counseling for parents of high-risk kids about the early signs and symptoms of diabetes. PLEASE NOTE:
