This weekend, we tabled at the Puget Sound Engineering Council’s Engineering Fair!

It was a wonderful time trying to invoke young minds to the wonders of HVAC and Engineering. We used a STEM kit to demonstrate pressure drop and explain friction. It’s never too early to get children to think like an engineer by asking ”how” and “why”!

On our last day of celebration for National Engineers Week, we have Board Member Pedro Alicea!

Where do you work? - P2S Engineering

What is your involvement in ASHRAE? - Board of Governors

What made you want to be an engineer? - I wanted to be an engineer due to a curiosity of how things worked. Working with my father, I would work on cars and household items, fixing them and maintaining them. As a result, I have been flown around the world from Belgium to South America, working on exciting projects everywhere.

What advice do you have for those who want to become engineers? - Be inquisitive. The only dumb question is the question that isn't asked.

Day 3 of celebrating National Engineer’s Week with Puget Sound Chapter Student Activities Chair, Lynndy Ruddell!

Where do you work? - Affiliated Engineers

What is your involvement in ASHRAE? - Puget Sound Student Activites Chair, Technical Committee 1.7 (Legal, Business and Education), and Technical Committee 6.1 (Hydronics)

What made you want to be an engineer? - Growing up I always liked knowing not just the why but the HOW of the way things worked. My dad is a project manager so I’ve been around the construction world my whole life. I took physics in high school and was fully inspired, though I won’t lie it didn’t last long. In college I thought about changing my major a LOT until one day things just sort of started to click for me. All I wanted to do in life was help people. It took me a while to realize that doesn’t meant you have to become a doctor to do so. Engineering is in everything, whether we know it or not.

What advice do you have for those who want to be Engineers? - Persevere. The coursework can be grueling, but it’s all to learn how to think like an engineer and work through the problems at hand. Don’t be scared to put yourself out there and think outside of the box.

Next up on our volunteer list is Board of Governor, Krishnan Gowri!

Where do you work? - Director of Building Performance, Intertek Building Science Solutions

What is your involvement in ASHRAE? - Board of Governor, Puget Sound Chapter; ASHRAE Fellow and ASHRAE Distinguished Award recipient

What made you want to be an engineer? - As a kid, I was fascinated with numbers and math puzzles. While at college, I was introduced to computer applications and it became my passion to translate every engineering problem to be a software program. During my graduate studies, I tried to develop software for architects and designers to comply with ASHRAE 90.1 standard. Now I am exploring applications of AI technology for thermal, moisture and energy performance of buildings, along with the traditional analysis tools for building performance assessments.

What advice do you have for those who want to become engineers? - Be curious, try to ask how and why things work. Commit yourself to finding solution to everyday engineering problems and you will discover your passion. With energy codes becoming stringent, and decarbonization, net-zero and sustainability taking the center stage of designing and operating buildings, ASHRAE engineering opportunities are boundless. Energy modeling, HVAC equipment and systems, controls technologies and energy management are a few topics you can explore. Become an ASHRAE member and get your first ASHRAE Handbook to get started.

Thanks for volunteering, Krishnan!

First up on our volunteer profiles is Puget Sound Chapter President, Ty Wasserman!

Where do you work? - Trane

What is your involvement in ASHRAE? - Current President, Volunteer for 7 Years

What made you want to be an engineer? - Growing up with both parents being math teachers, I’ve always been interested in math and science. My path diverged from theirs when I discovered the practical applications of math and what you can do with it; it naturally lead to finding engineering.

What advice do you have for those who want to become engineers? - Do it! My biggest piece of advice is do not lose focus on how this career can shape the world. It is easy to get stuck in the doldrums of day to day work, but encourage you to take a step back and really look at the potential impact you can make.
