Tibetan Nuns Project

Tibetan Nuns Project TNP supports 7 nunneries and over 900 Tibetan Buddhist nuns in India, educating and empowering them. Sidhpur 176057

The Tibetan Nuns Project is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1987. Our mission is to educate and empower nuns of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition as teachers and leaders; and to establish, strengthen, and support educational institutions to sustain Tibetan religion and culture. Traditionally, Buddhist nuns have not had the same access to education as monks. The Tibetan Nuns Project aims to

elevate the educational standards and the position of women. We created a groundbreaking education system aimed at both preserving Tibetan culture and empowering the nuns to live and become leaders in the modern world. Currently, the Tibetan Nuns Project supports over 700 nuns and seven nunneries in northern India from all Tibetan Buddhist traditions, as well as nuns living on their own and in retreat. Our efforts also include nuns and nunneries following the Tibetan Buddhist tradition in Buddhist communities within the Himalayan region of India such as Kinnaur, Spiti, Ladakh, and Zanskar. Over 30 years ago, many nuns began escaping from Tibet in search of religious and educational freedom. The majority of the nuns were destitute and illiterate, and they arrived in a refugee community already struggling to survive. These dedicated women wanted to live, study, practice, and teach in accordance with their spiritual beliefs. Ways to Support the Nuns:

It is less than one week to Saga Dawa Duchen, the most sacred of the four annual Buddhist festivals related to the life of the Buddha Shakyamuni. Saga Dawa Duchen falls on Sunday May 31st this year and commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and mahaparinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni. During the whole month of Saga Dawa (May 17 to June 15th, 2026) and especially on Saga Dawa Duchen, May 31st, the merit of one's actions is greatly multiplied.

Here is a wonderful report in by about the landmark two-day conference in Dharamsala on "WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT IN TIBETAN BUDDHISM" which brought together over 160 senior Buddhist nuns, scholars, and officials, including Rinchen Khando Choegyal and Youdon Aukatsang of the Tibetan Nuns Project. Key discussions highlighted the institutionalization of the Geshema degree (a doctorate equivalent) as a major milestone for gender equality. "Speakers and attendees emphasized that the conference resolved theological doubts, reshaped future education, and signaled a permanent, self-sustaining shift toward female leadership in Tibetan Buddhism."

Far-reaching consequences... the ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have led to a shortage of cooking gas in India. The world's most populous nation relies on LPG as its primary cooking fuel. Here are photos from Sherab Choeling Nunnery taken in April showing the nuns preparing meals on a traditional local chula using wood as fuel due to the LPG (gas cylinder) shortage. Sherab Choeling Nunnery in the remote Spiti Valley is home to 60 Tibetan Buddhist nuns and is one of seven nunneries supported by Tibetan Nuns Project donors.
