Don Alexander, for whom the Don Alexander “Freedom is a Constant Struggle” Award was named, passed away on March 26, 2018. A celebration of Don’s life will be held on June 23, 2018 from 2:30-5:00p.m. at the Central Area Senior Center (500 30th Ave. S, Seattle, WA 98144). Recipients of the “Freedom is a Constant Struggle” Award scholarships are particularly encouraged to attend. Recipients, if you are unable to attend, please consider sending a note to Don’s wife Fran in care of [email protected]. An updated on what you have been doing since graduating from high school, and especially how you are being active in your community would be particularly appreciated.
Don was known as a dedicated and determined community activist and long-time advocate for Rainier Beach High School students. Don’s wife, Fran Alexander, established the scholarship in honor of Don’s 75th birthday, with the intention of recognizing US-heritage black students who show commitment to activism and community service. Since its inception, 17 students have received scholarships, totaling over $16,000 dollars. Don continued to care deeply about young people and take a strong interest in education and activism up until the end. Less than a week before his death, he visited with drama students at Rainier Beach High School to talk to them about being awarded a $10,000 theater grant and to share stories with them about the community activism that lead to the construction & naming of the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Center. He also was encouraged by student activists fighting against gun violence and racism. More details about Don can be found at:

Don Alexander was born in Cincinnati, OH in 1933. By age 6 his family moved to Chicago, IL, and that is where Alexander called home until 1950 when he and his family moved to Los Angeles, CA. In 1989 Don and his wife, Fran moved to Seattle, WA and have been here ever since. By …
