Bring in the New Year supporting youth in our communities! In spite of 2020 being an all around challenging year, The Austin Foundation still served over 1,800 scholars ages 5-17, while providing over 300 fitness sessions and classes for youth and families both in person and through virtual programming. Our goals are even BIGGER for 2021! Donate before the New Year rings in by clicking this link: http://www.youthandfitness.org/donate/index.html

Three times a week this summer, the Franklin High School girls Volleyball team has been working out with The Austin Foundation trainers, outdoors. Despite uncertainty about whether their season will even happen, these young ladies still endure the hot sun, temperature checks, masks and all the cleansing sprays and cleaning routines, to do these voluntary workouts. The Austin Foundation is proud to support all of our scholar athletes in this time. Keep pushing our youth to be great, no matter what!

The Austin Foundation is a proud advocate and humble servant to the youth and families of our community. As an organization that serves so many families and children, directly or indirectly impacted by mass incarceration who are disproportionately targeted by implicit biases of law enforcement and imbalanced systems of justice designed for continual oppression, The Austin Foundation stands strong with our brothers and sisters here, and across the country at this trying time.
This moment necessitates an active response, and it also has greatly tested our mental and physical health and wellbeing. This week, we want to stress the importance of self-care, self-love and awareness of mental health and empowerment through positive thought and action. Edna Sadberry is our mental health specialist who works with many of our students and families to help alleviate the damages of trauma. Edna talks about the importance of talking with our kids about the fears they may be facing now and offers some ways for them to help cope and deal with the stress and anxieties they may be facing.

Melody started in our Jr. Trainer program as a youth intern and now she's a trainer with the Austin Foundation! Even during social distancing, Melody is still a vital mentor to our youth through our distance learning programs!

Give Big starts tomorrow and is our collective way of supporting more youth like Melody. Any contribution small or large goes towards programming and development of our future leaders.

Who We Are

Austin Foundation's MISSION is to transform lives, through education, positive mentors and providing accessible, safe, interactive opportunities for young people to experience the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Today's youth face serious challenges to their basic health and well being. Our youth are eating worse and exercising less, often as a result of factors out of their control. A growing number of youth confront serious health issues such as stress, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and violence. These health problems carry lasting implications and if left unchecked can severely affect a child's long-term quality of life.

Local schools are increasingly being forced to reduce or cut physical education programs altogether and scale back school lunch programs. The health crisis affects youth in low income communities the most. 20% of African American, Hispanic, and Native American children ages 6-19 are considered overweight, well above the national average. Youth in these communities have limited access to healthy foods and safe places to engage in physical activity. Making matters worse, a growing number of young people face violence or the threat of violence in their daily lives.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, "the major barriers most people face when trying to increase physical activity are time, access to convenient facilities, and safe environments in which to be active."

The Austin Foundation provides free fitness and nutrition education for thousands of Seattle/King County area young people ages 5 to 25 each year. The Austin Foundation hosts a wide variety of fitness and youth development programs at sites around the city, each of which is tailored to help young people develop physically, socially, emotionally and mentally. The Austin Foundation bridges racial and socioeconomic inequities in health, providing young people the tools and inspiration to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
