On September 1st, we hosted the Ubuntu Nerudo Cultural Festival - a vibrant celebration of culture, unity, and heritage🇿🇼. We were reminded of the power of community, as diverse voices came together to share their stories, traditions, and art - like the Zambuko Marimba Ensemble, whose melodies floated through the air, weaving together tradition and joy in every note!

The event was a beautiful reflection of the meaning of our organisation's name and our ethos – ‘I am because we are.’

We are eternally grateful to everyone who made this day an unforgettable experience, and for allowing us the opportunity to continue honouring our roots and uplifting one another!

Pictured here are some organic vegetables from the Ubuntu Nerudo farm! 🥬🧑🏾‍🌾

When Ken Chikonzo and Ranga Rutendo Chikonzo moved to the United States from Zimbabwe, a huge thing they quickly realised was that some of their favourite vegetables that they were used to, for example:
- “muboora” (pumpkin leaves),
- “tsunga” (mustard greens), and
- chomolia
were not as easily obtainable as they used to be.

Sure, with time they adapted to what was available, but the yearning for what their palettes were used to was unrelenting. Hence the idea of setting up a farm came to fruition as a way to have accessibility to the things that they had at home!

It has played a huge role in connecting them with their Zimbabwean friends in the US, plus has helped them bring exposure and awareness to the vegetables themselves to those who were not previously familiar!

And in case you’re interested, you’re free to order some from us. 😉

We at Ubuntu Nerudo grow a plethora of crops!

Bringing a piece of home to America has revealed itself to be something we hold dear to our hearts. 🇿🇼There's nothing more rewarding than watching our fellow diasporans reconnect with our roots by picking fresh, native vegetables right from our farm! 🌱 At the end of the day it's all about preserving our heritage - with the added benefit of nourishing our bodies!

🇿🇼Within every row of crops we tend to here in Seattle, there exists a piece of our homeland - Zimbabwe. The soil beneath our feet and the plants we nurture allow us to have a tangible connection to our roots, reminding us of the vibrant fields and agricultural heritage of our home.

As we grow these culturally relevant plants, we are not just cultivating food; we are fostering a sense of community among fellow Zimbabweans and other Africans here. Through our shared love for growing and nurturing, we create a space where our heritage thrives, even miles away from the land of our ancestors.

On assignment with Washington Farmland Trust - who support farmers like us - CaravanLab spent some time with us to hear more about how in our time of sorrow (after the loss of our beloved daughter, Laura) we brought community together to help uplift us through the Zimbabwean practice of "Nhimbe." As explained in a previous post, this is the concept of communal farming and mutual assistance. It's a beautiful practice that embodies the spirit of community and cooperation which seeks to breed unity, strength, and happiness.

is an annual celebration of emancipation, black joy, and black accomplishments. We were elated to celebrate it this year with Front and Centered and other organisations dedicated to the uplifting of black communities. It was so special to honour this holiday alongside champions of Black excellence!

🇿🇼💡: Fun fact: maize is Zimbabwe's staple crop. We use it to make sadza, which is our staple cuisine! Hence, growing it helps us feel closer to home.

Maize is packed with fibre, vitamins, and can lead to a healthier and happier you!
