Kentucky deemed the damage to the walls of the apartment more valuable than the life and justice for Breonna Taylor. Let’s be clear the problem and the solution to this tragedy does not stop simply by prosecuting the cops. We cannot reform these systemic conditions that can justify this kind of policing. An US attorney general said “Criminal law is not meant to respond to every sorrow and grief.” 😐there’s also no justice in the criminal legal system. I’m so sorry Breonna you deserve justice but more importantly you deserve to be here.

Today marks the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic
“I have a dream” speech.

George Floyd, Ahmaud Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, Elijah Mcclain, and the attempted murder of Jacob Blake WE ARE STILL MARCHING and carrying the weight of the past and present with us. With lessons from the Civil Rights Movement and the energy from the youth that are keeping this movement alive, WE MARCH ON in the names of BLACK LIVES because 57 years later y’all still understand why we MATTER.

On this day in 1955 Emmett Till, a 14 year old black child was kidnapped, beaten, and lynched by two white men for allegedly harassing a white women at a grocery store. 11 years after his killers were acquitted by an all white jury they admitted to killing Emmett and were even paid to tell their story. In 2008 the white women who accused Emmett Till retracted her statement and confessed
It never happened. “It’s important that people understanding how the word of a white person against a black person was law, and a lot of black people lost their lives because of it. It really speaks to history, it shows what black people went through in those days.”

“To those who have said, 'Be patient and wait,' we have long said that we cannot be patient. We do not want our freedom gradually, but we want to be free now... We must say, 'Wake up America! Wake up!' For we cannot stop, and we will not and cannot be patient." — John Lewis

In addition Staff, Volunteers and Clients will receive disposable masks and antibacterial wipes. 💛💚❤️

Hand hygiene is an important part to the response of COVID-19. Practicing hand hygiene (WASHING YOUR HANDS) also includes the use of hand sanitizer which is a simple yet effective way to decrease the spread. We need all hands on deck, we’re better together!

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING!

I’m so glad that people are finally educating themselves on what this day has meant to us for 155 years.

While we celebrate emancipation today on Juneteenth , we must also remember that we have a long way to go to achieve true justice in the United States. Systemic, institutionalized racism remains entrenched throughout our society. Facing history is a step in the right direction.

1.) I can’t begin to describe how monumental this is for my LGBTQ brothers + sisters.

2.) I find it outrageous that three Supreme Court Judges in America still voted against this..... in 2020 🙄

3.) If you’re in a leadership role and needed a law to prevent you from discriminating against LGBTQ workers then you shouldn’t be in any position of power.

4.) Although this law protects our rights on paper that doesn’t mean the hate will stop. 56 years later Black and Brown folks still face Discrimination in the work place. The fight still continues, know your rights!

5.) Let’s not get distracted, over the weekend the Trump administration made it legal AGAIN for Healthcare providers to deny services to our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. This is serious especially during a pandemic. I can only imagine what another four years would be like for us. VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

Happy pride month! 🏳️‍🌈 Today is the start of a month long celebration where we highlight the freedom and progression that our LGBTQIA + community has made thus far. As an organization that was founded by BIPOC we would be remiss if we did not address the collective exhaustion that our black community is feeling right now surrounding the unjustly and horrendous MURDER of George Floyd. His death comes just weeks after Breonna Taylor an EMT worker who was in her home sleeping before she was SHOT TO DEATH EIGHT TIMES by an undercover cop and Ahmaud Arbery who we saw on video running through a predominantly white neighborhood before defending himself against two armed and dangerous white men which sadly resulted in yet another unjust MURDER. As the world watched George Floyd take his last breath it’s a constant reminder that our government local, state and federal continue to view us as less than. From the emancipation proclamation to the civil rights movement to now Black lives matters we’re still fighting the same exact fight that our ancestors fought. We’ve been suffocated by the knee’s of many Derek Chauvin for far too long, when do our Black lives start to matter? I understand many of us have become desensitized and have internalized this type of injustice as part of our black experience but how much longer must we endure this dehumanization.

To all my non-Black q***r folks, we understand the importance of pride month which originated from the Stonewall riot in 1969 where Black trans activist such as Marsha P. Johnson were prominent figures. We ask that you be mindful and not diminish or compare the black q***r experience to your own experience. To be black and q***r means that not only are you judged, targeted and possibly murdered for your lifestyle but you are also judged, targeted, and more likely to be murdered for just simply existing in your Black skin. That experience is mentally emotionally and physically ineffable. For those who want to help and become an ally this is an opportunity for you to assert your social privilege at the very system that suppresses the social and economic development of our Black communities.

As weakened as we’ve felt over the past few days, I’ve discovered a glimpse of hope seeing people showing up and showing out to protest to educate to learn in solidarity with our Black brothers and sisters. We must continue this fight. Black lives still matter even during pride month. 🏳️‍🌈✊🏽🏳️‍🌈✊🏾🏳️‍🌈✊🏿

As we here at SHFA continue to assist our community, we will also provide information for other community resources that are becoming available.

Working people in Seattle are struggling because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our region is transitioning from having one of the lowest unemployment rates anywhere, to seeing unemployment claims soar statewide. That’s why Mayor Jenny Durkan created an expanded grocery voucher program, which will provide $800 in grocery vouchers to working people who have recently lost their job or seen a significant reduction in hours due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
