❤️🇹🇴🇺🇸
Some days I'm not sure if I'm making an impact with my work as a journalist, podcaster, storyteller, but then comes someone like Celina Tupou-Fulivai, a woman I interviewed today for my upcoming episode on the need for more AANHPI women to run for office on a local, state and federal level. Celina is a proud Tongan American who's considering running on the local level in Tacoma because she wants better representation for Pacific Islanders in politics. Why? Because for far too long AANHPI have been dismissed, voiceless and invisibilized.
I was SO happy to talk with her and connect on such an authentic level to learn about her background, her struggles, and her journey to finding her voice. She said she wasn't sure why I wanted to interview her when there are so many other "more qualified" people. She added that she struggles with "imposter syndrome" and wonders if there's value to what she can bring. I stopped her right there and said, "You have value and don't you think for a second you don't. Women, especially women of color, tend to undervalue themselves constantly, thinking they aren't worthy, but YOU ARE WORTHY and you are SO REAL! That's why people are going to be drawn to you and connect with you. It's about authenticity, realness and sharing your truth with others."
Celina started crying and thanked me for my words, but I'm the one that's thankful because she reminded me of why I do what I do...to put a spotlight on people like her, stories that need to be told, issues that must be addressed. What a privilege.
Thank you Celina for reminding me of why I do what I do.
