Throwback Thursday with SAA!

In February our amazing volunteers traveled to Montgomery and New Orleans, learning about civil rights history firsthand by engaging with historic sites.

Through this experience, our students foster the perspectives needed to become thoughtful advocates and future leaders.

We are so proud of the dedication of our students and are excited for the rest of the upcoming trips this year!

Why Wednesday with SAA!

Hear from student Alexa about her WHY, why she serves, leads, and learns with SAA.

“SAA has taught me to ask deeper questions about the history of our country and showed me how simple acts of service can have profound impacts on the lives of those we serve.”

Each year while in Montgomery, we spend a morning at the Legacy Museum created by the Equal Justice Initiative. The museum shares the history of slavery, racial terror, and mass incarceration in America, all stories that are painful but necessary to confront. We’re grateful for the chance to learn from these truths and to carry them with us as we serve with empathy and awareness.

Enjoy some Thursday tunes from the Treme Brass Band!

We are so grateful for our connection with the Treme Brass Band 💙 They always show us the heart and spirit of New Orleans through their traditional NOLA style music and we always look forward to hearing them and dancing together on each of our trips!

Sunday Spotlight with SAA!

While in NOLA we always visit StudioBE, an amazing art space created by Brandan “Bmike” Odums. Through his installations, Odums focuses on the story of resistance through art and the importance of mental health, highlighting the Black American experience in the current and past American culture. In a 36,000 square foot warehouse, StudioBE is an incredible space that showcases the encapsulation of New Orleans culture as well as work of young artists and activists. It is always inspiring to visit as a team.

Sunday Spotlight with SAA!

While working on jobsites in the Lower Ninth Ward we love to visit Burnell’s, the first grocery store open in the neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina devastated the community. Burnell Colten always welcomes us, sharing the story of how he started the business to help the community when there was an apparent ‘food desert’ after the disaster. He also shares the names of many famous people who have visited him, including Ellen DeGeneres who donated washers and dryers to help set up a laundromat in part of the building for the community.

Burnell Colten is one of the many amazing people working to rebuild the community of the Lower Ninth Ward like we do rebuilding houses each year and we are so grateful to know him! If you ever get the chance, visit Burnell’s and say hi!!

Applications close tomorrow at midnight, so
get them in now!!

And while you’re finishing up applications, hear how SAA could impact your life from our Core Team member Joe who works on our Broadcast partnerships:

“SAA is a life changing program that not only lets you experience the deep south and culture of New Orleans through an in-depth service trip, but lets you become a leader. I’ve grown since joining SAA in my sports, academics, and other activities because of the qualities I’ve gained from the program. I’ve made long lasting connections with other members and SAA affiliates that will continue to positively influence my life forever.” (Joe)
