Pangea Giving Pangea Giving, a 501(c)3 nonprofit giving circle We make grants in places where there are high levels of poverty and vulnerability to human rights abuses.

Pangea Giving is a Seattle-based giving circle that gives its members and donors direct, thoughtful, and effective ways to support grassroots organizations in developing countries to improve quality of life in their community. We believe that lasting change is built from the ground up. Our grants support the self-defined needs of local communities, and build the capacity of community organizations and leadership to meet those needs. We currently have grant partners in SE Asia, E Africa, and Latin America.

AI and agroecology might seem worlds apart — one futuristic, the other rooted in traditional knowledge. But our African partner TAI Kenya is showing how powerfully they can work together. Using digital and AI‑enabled tools such as FarmerChat (aka FarmChart), they’re strengthening agroecology practices among farmers in the arid and semi‑arid communities of Eastern Kenya. FarmerChat is a free, multilingual, AI‑powered advisory platform that provides real‑time, localized, climate‑smart guidance to smallholder farmers and extension agents.

Lydia, one of TAI Kenya’s clients, describes how transformative the app has been for her: “Imagine having a problem and not knowing the solution is right in your hand. I watched aphids curl the leaves of my kales and spinach and cut my harvest, and I didn’t want to use chemical sprays that harm the soil and our health. After learning to use FarmChart, I asked the app for organic solutions. It advised me to spray a homemade mix of neem leaves and garlic, and to plant marigolds and onions between my crops. Within weeks the infestation dropped and my crops recovered — all at almost no cost.”

We've just awarded a small grant to a new partner in Guatemala: RAMA (Red Agroecológica Maya Achi), a network of agroecology‑focused groups in the Maya Achi region near Rabinal. The Maya Achi are one of Guatemala’s 21 Indigenous peoples, each with its own language and traditions.

RAMA was recently formed by four organizations working together to scale agroecology and strengthen food sovereignty across 39 communities. Our grant will support the new organic farmers’ market and help produce educational materials — including a video — promoting agroecological methods.

Another of our partners, Voces y Manos, is one of RAMA’s founding members. We’re excited to see how quickly this collaboration grows.

In the Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda, we support Unique Space, a program for adolescent girls run by Raise Chess Academy. It focuses on newly arrived refugees—teens who are coping with trauma from displacement and are especially vulnerable to sexual abuse.

The girls spend four days a week in RCA’s general education program, building literacy and numeracy skills. On the fifth day, they join Unique Space, where each session begins with education on sexual and reproductive health, consent, and hygiene management, followed by discussion and peer support. The No Means No curriculum is at the core of this work.

Later in the day, the girls learn handicrafts such as sewing and crocheting—activities that encourage socializing, confidence, and the opportunity to make simple, useful things.

A cornerstone of Pangea’s work is our Education Program, which helps deepen understanding of global issues and encourages greater international giving among our members and the broader Seattle/PNW community. These learning events support our grantmaking and travel work by exploring regional challenges, promising solutions, and philanthropic best practices.

Some sessions are formal presentations by experts; others feature visiting grant partners or report‑backs from site visit teams. Recent programs have included an agroecology webinar, a discussion of how USAID policy changes affect the Global South, and a presentation from our Ugandan partner on supporting refugee youth as they settle into their new country.

Food security has always been a core concern for Pangea Giving, and we believe sustainable agriculture is key to improving nutrition in the communities where we work. Last year, our Southeast Asia pod began supporting The Association for Green (TAG), an organization focused on these issues in Laos’ rural provinces.

Our first grant helped launch a forest conservation project to protect the malva tree — a species important for restoring forest cover in the south and for supporting local families who harvest and market malva nuts.

This year, we’re funding an agricultural education program called “Grow to Learn, Learn to Grow,” a collaboration between a vocational technical school and nearby secondary schools. With 60% of the Lao population under 25 and mostly living in rural areas, hands on training in sustainable farming and business practices is essential for students’ futures.

The program teaches ecologically friendly agriculture, the business skills needed to run a small farm, and the operation of a year-round demonstration farm that produces fresh vegetables and generates income.

Pangea’s new partner Mujeres en Desarrollo (MUDEM) in the Mixtec region of Oaxaca is celebrating the completion of the first phase of a larger project supported in part by our grant. Working with seven women from La Laguna San Miguel Amatitlán, MUDEM helped each household build a rainwater collection system to capture, store, and purify increasingly unpredictable rainfall for family use.

These systems relieve women and girls from walking miles every day to fetch water and carry it home — freeing up time and energy and avoiding the risks of accidents, mistreatment, or violence along the way.

Next step in this project: establishing agroecological home gardens at the same households, strengthening food security and resilience.

One of Pangea Giving’s goals is to support early‑stage projects led by groups working to strengthen their own communities. Our hope is that as they grow and learn, they’ll be able to attract additional funders and expand their impact.

Many of these efforts are led by women — including Kisiwa Vision Women’s Group near Bungoma, Kenya. In four rural villages, they’re addressing environmental challenges that threaten health and livelihoods: planting trees on deforested hillsides, filling stagnant brickmaking ponds to reduce malaria risk, expanding a beekeeping enterprise, and training farmers in climate‑smart methods that improve food security. Most of the cost is carried by the community itself, with Pangea offering support as these efforts take root.

Their latest report shows encouraging progress, and we’re inspired by their leadership as they put these plans into action.

At Pangea Giving, community is at the heart of everything we do. We're a circle of people who care about learning together, giving thoughtfully, and building relationships with partners around the world. Sometimes that means gathering to explore global issues or make grant decisions, sometimes it means traveling to far-off places--and sometimes it simply means enjoying each other's company on a beautiful summer evening. Curious what it feels like to be part of Pangea? We'd love to welcome you into the circle.

At Pangea Giving, we partner with small, community¬rooted organizations with strong local leadership and work that aligns with our focus areas: climate and environmental justice, food security, women’s empowerment, education, and Indigenous rights.

How do we find them? Through referrals from past partners and other funders, careful research, and conversations during our site visits. When we travel to meet current partners, we often also visit organizations that may be a good fit for future collaboration. When we find a good candidate, we invite them to submit an application. (We don’t accept unsolicited applications.)

Right now, we’re planning a trip to Cambodia later this year -- to learn from several community-led groups doing promising work and to explore whether they might become Pangea partners in the year ahead.

In northern Thailand, our partners at Fortune Group support thousands of migrant workers who have fled political oppression and economic insecurity in neighboring Myanmar. They arrive in Fang District facing uncertainty and the challenge of rebuilding their lives in a new country.

Fortune provides practical help — facilitating paperwork such as ID cards and work permits in a new language, offering training on migrant rights and new ways of earning a living, sponsoring health screenings, and providing educational support. They also help preserve and celebrate the rich culture of the Shan people through arts, music, and dance, a source of continuity and pride.

Pangea members visited early this year to learn more about Fortune's work and how Pangea's grants have moved that work along.
