The month of May is Jewish American Heritage Month, a time to remember and celebrate all the wonderful contributions that Jewish Americans have made.

We wanted to cover a wide array of Jewish Americans this year, instead of just focusing on one industry like science or entertainment. After all, it’s hard to find a field that Jews haven’t helped form.

Today marks not just Ethiopian Memorial Day, but also Jerusalem Day in Israel.

The two being on the same day is completely intentional, as the story of Ethiopian Jews is deeply connected to Jerusalem.

Today we honor the Beta Israel community, who sacrificed so much to return home to Jerusalem, the land of Israel.

We honor their courage, tenacity, and never wavering commitment to their community, to Torah and to our people as a whole.

Today we honor them and remember those lost.

May their memory be a blessing.

A true celebration of diversity does not mean whitewashing history.

It does not mean only the dominant group gets to tell and share their stories and identities.

All too often, the Middle East, North Africa, and other parts of the world are reduced to one identity, ignoring how that identity arrived there via colonialism.

True celebration means seeing each identity and culture from a wider lens, especially through the lens of the people themselves.

As Jews, we know all too well about being erased from the region’s history.

We stand alongside the other indigenous groups who continue to be erased as well.
