🔎 FFF: Shop Steward or Union Officer—What’s the Difference?

Both shop stewards and union officers play important roles, but their responsibilities are different.

🛠️ A shop steward works directly with members in the workplace. Stewards help answer contract questions, support members during workplace meetings, identify potential contract violations, assist with grievances, and serve as a connection between members and the union.

📋 A union officer is elected to help lead and govern the union. Officers carry out the duties of their specific position, help make decisions, oversee union business, attend meetings, and ensure the organization follows its bylaws and the wishes of the membership.

Some members may serve in both roles—but holding one position does not automatically mean someone holds the other.

An easy way to remember it:

➡️ Stewards represent members where they work.
➡️ Officers help lead the organization as a whole.

Both roles depend on engaged members and work toward the same goal: protecting workers, enforcing the contract, and building a stronger union. ✊

On Women's Equality Day, we honor the trailblazers who fought for a voice, a vote and a seat at the table - and the union women who continue that fight today.

Across the IAM, women are organizing, leading and standing up for fairness on the job. That's the union difference: when working people stand together, we have the power to break down barriers, demand equal pay and win the respect every worker deserves.

The fight for equality continues - and union women are leading the way.

On Women's Equality Day, District 142 recognizes and celebrates the women who have paved the way for progress and those who continue the fight for equality every day. Our union sisters stand at the forefront of the battle for workplace fairness, equal pay, and equal opportunity. Through their leadership, courage, and dedication, they continue to break barriers and ensure every worker is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Organizing never stops. ✊

Sometimes organizing means reaching out to workers who want a voice, dignity, and protection on the job. Other times, it means strengthening the union from within—mentoring members, developing new leaders, and preparing people to stand up for one another.

That’s what our upcoming Fall Mentorship Event is all about.

We recently held a run-through meeting to prepare for the event, and we’re excited to bring members together for learning, connection, and a little fun! Strong unions are built when experienced members share what they know and help others find their own voice.

Whether we are bringing more workers into the union or helping current members become stronger advocates, every conversation matters.

Many IAM contracts include a formal process for employees to protest or challenge bid awards when they believe the contract or seniority rules were not properly applied. These provisions help protect seniority, ensure the bidding process is followed consistently, and give members a clear path to raise concerns when something doesn’t look right. Contract language matters — and so does knowing your rights. ✊
