Alaska and Hawaiian Flight Attendants stand with Horizon Flight Attendants! Contract now!

Horizon AFA Flight Attendants vote 99.8% to authorize a strike.

“We have dedicated our lives to Horizon and the communities that we serve. We are simply asking for the pay, benefits, and improvements we have earned,” said Lisa Davis Warren, HZN AFA MEC President. “But Horizon management seems uninterested in resolving this dispute or showing the slightest concern for frontline workers who can’t afford rent or other basic life necessities.”

This vote sends an unmistakable message to management that Horizon Flight Attendants won’t accept endless delays and outrageously low economic proposals.

✈️ On June 8, our AFA Hotel Committee Chairs held their monthly meeting to address concerns raised by crews with management. Here’s what the Committee is focused on:

🛏️ FAI Room Placement: We’re following up on room placement guarantees at our FAI hotel, as crews continue to report ongoing issues.

❄️ SIT Property HVAC Upgrades: In SIT, the hotel has committed to installing individual HVAC units in all crew rooms by fall 2026. If this commitment isn’t met, we’ve already approved an alternate property.

📋 Awaiting Decisions (pmAS): We’re still awaiting final hotel decisions for layovers in SJO, JFK, DFW, PHX, and ATL. We’ll keep you updated as soon as decisions are made.

🚐 Ground Transportation Challenges: We’re addressing issues such as transportation providers denying rides to crewmember guests (MSY/BOS/JFK), vehicle A/C problems (HNL and LHR), and late pickups (FCO). We’ve asked management to follow up with vendors to clarify procedures (ATL) and improve reliability.

🔎 TBD Transparency (pmAS): Management will begin listing reasons for any TBD hotels in monthly updates, so you’ll know why a hotel assignment is pending during the bid process.

💡 Best and Final Hotel Contract Negotiations: Before we visit any market, the Committee carefully reviews all hotel proposals—including amenities like F&B discounts and complimentary breakfast. We’ve noticed some amenities initially offered are being removed during the final negotiation rounds with API, resulting in lower nightly rates for management but less overall value for crews. Our recommendations are based on the hotel’s complete offering, and removing benefits after the fact may impact our preferences. We’ve asked for transparency during the negotiation process with the hotels to ensure that what was initially agreed upon isn’t given away.

🤝 Gainshare Program (pmAS): Negotiations are currently stalled due to management’s concerns about federal tax implications. We remain committed to reaching a fair solution for all involved.

Here’s a quick recap of the key topics discussed at the pre-merger Alaska Reserve Committee meeting with management on June 4:

🛫 New Hire Onboarding: The Committee is pushing for improved onboarding during training and smoother transitions for new hires at base, including base orientation. Class 2-26 graduated and started online in ANC on June 1. No other classes are planned for this year.

💸 Reserve Pay Anomalies: The Committee addressed issues with AM Reserves being assigned APSB shifts ending after noon without proper conversion to ER. Reserves are encouraged to check Rainmaker for APSB shifts ending after the daily last flight; these should be paid at 3x. For daily last flight pay, call Crew Scheduling and request release after the last flight departs to guarantee 2x pay if denied. Delays may affect eligibility. If you believe pay is missing, contact your Local Reserve Committee Chairperson.

🔄 Flexibility for Reserves: Management agreed to review ARC minimums and consider awarding more Personal Drops and Bulletin Board Drops.

📄 Contractual Issues: Disagreements unresolved with Crew Scheduling Supervisors are escalated to Scheudling Review Board (SRB) or Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR). Recent issues discussed include double out rest, day rooms, and self-assignment removal.

📝 Committee Initiatives:
1. Updating and posting the Reserve Survival Guide and Reserve 101, plus developing Q&A videos for Reserves.
2. Answering pay questions and clarifying Reserve Guarantee/premium pay provisions.
3. Investigating contractual issues and reminding Flight Attendants to use the AFA Alaska Online Support Center for support.

📣 We Want Your Feedback! Share your concerns or suggestions with your Local Reserve Committee or open a support ticket via the AFA Alaska Online Support Center (support.afaalaska.org). Your input drives our advocacy!

🕶️ Meta Smart Glasses: Discussion about the use of Meta smart glasses onboard, privacy concerns, and potential operational distractions. New policy will prohibit Flight Attendants from using Meta glasses while working.

🧰 Emergency Equipment Accessibility: Raised issues with retrofitted 737-800 overhead emergency equipment. Continued reporting is needed to improve access and safety.

❄️ Cold Weather Evacuation: Discussed the lack of cold-weather uniform options during emergencies. Looking into additional guidance and training.

🗑️ MAX 9 Galley Trash Bins: Ongoing work to address trash and sanitation issues in MAX 9 galleys. Maintenance and Engineering (M&E) is planning a retrofit later this year.

🔄 Pairings remain a concern, with ongoing efforts to address issues and improve assignments. An audible alarm reminder for B2B check-in has been suggested to assist Flight Attendants.

🛩️ Charter operations face timing challenges, causing passenger frustration. Recommendations include better scheduling and communication with charter coordinators, as well as improvements to pre-boarding processes.

🌙 Redeye flights and aircraft downgrades continue to impact schedules and pairings. The contract language is under review for clarity and fairness in reassignments.

😴 Crew rest area concerns at PAE and long sits are being evaluated for adequate rest spaces.

💸 Payroll topics: Ongoing discussions about reassignment pay denials for specific city pairings.

🗳️ PBS Subcommittee: High activity before bidding, with record protests about bid awards—mainly due to website issues and high line averages. Technical fixes and user support are underway.

📊 Crew Planning: July block hours are up, and reserve ratios are steady. Redeye pairings are highest in ANC, SEA, and SAN. Trip distribution was reviewed for commuting challenges and flexibility.

⚠️ IRROPS: Construction and ATC delays have impacted duty start/end times, increased crew connections, and required specific minimum rest periods.

📅 Crew Scheduling: Sick leave trending down but still at 12%. Reserve utilization is high. Fatigue reports remain a concern, and management is undertaking targeted initiatives to improve operational efficiency and premium pay management.

💻 ITS/Tech: Please use/submit Cherwell tickets for IT issues. PBS/NAVBLUE testing continues, with automation nearing completion. Open Time Trade response times remain strong.

🛠️ JCTE: Upcoming software releases include multiple fixes and improvements for Flight Attendants and Crew Scheduling.
