My husband paid our babysitter double for months — when I confronted her, she asked, "You really don't know?"
I only noticed the payments because I was looking for a completely different transaction.
Our babysitter, Megan, was supposed to get $600 a week.
But for the past four months, my husband had been sending her $1,200.
Every single week.
At first, I thought it had to be a mistake.
Then I checked the previous month.
Same thing.
Megan had been watching our eight-year-old daughter, Sophie, for almost two years. I trusted her completely.
At least, I had.
The next afternoon, I waited until Sophie went upstairs.
"Megan, can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Why has my husband been paying you double?"
Her face changed immediately.
"What?"
"You're supposed to get six hundred a week. He's been giving you twelve hundred for four months."
She stared at me.
"Wait... he never told you?"
"Told me what?"
Her face went pale. She grabbed her bag.
"You really don't know? I think you should talk to your husband."
"No. I'm talking to you."
She stopped.
"You've been taking thousands of dollars from my husband behind my back. I want to know why."
Megan looked genuinely uncomfortable.
Finally, she said:
"He pays me for additional services."
I just stared at her.
"What kind of additional services?"
"It's not what you're thinking."
"You have no idea what I'm thinking."
"Sometimes after I pick Sophie up from school, he asks me to take her to another house."
"Take her WHERE?"
"To the other little girl's house."
I couldn't understand anything.
"What other little girl?"
Megan's expression changed again. She went silent.
"I don't think I should be the one telling you this."
That was enough.
I didn't call Billy.
I waited until that evening. I wanted to look him in the eyes and hear the truth.
The second he walked through the door, I was waiting for him.
"We need to talk."
He took one look at my face.
"What happened?"
"I talked to Megan."
He froze.
"About what?"
"About the extra money you've been paying her."
"Alice—"
"She told me about the other house."
Billy didn't say anything.
"And the little girl."
His face changed.
"Is she yours?"
"Alice, it's not that simple."
"Not that SIMPLE?"
"Please, just let me explain."
"Then explain! Why have you been secretly paying our babysitter to take Sophie to see another little girl?"
Before Billy could answer, I heard footsteps behind me.
Sophie was standing in the doorway.
Her face went pale.
"Dad?"
Billy turned around.
"Sweetheart, it's okay."
Suddenly, Sophie burst into tears.
"Dad, no! PLEASE!"
I stared at her.
"Sophie?"
Billy walked over to her.
"Hey. It's going to be okay. Don't worry."
But Sophie was shaking her head.
"No, it won't!"
"Sophie, what are you talking about?"
She looked at me, crying.
"You'll make us stop seeing each other!"
I froze.
"Seeing WHO?"
Billy put his arm around Sophie.
"Alice, there's something I need to explain."
"Then explain it."
Sophie grabbed his arm. She looked terrified.
And then, through tears, she said:
"Because if Mom finds out the truth, she'll never let me see her again."
