Sea Turtles Forever

"When we started, our turtles were the old survivors of a much larger group, which we tagged and monitored over two decades. Most of the original turtles we tagged have reached the end of their normal life-span. If we didn’t start when we did, this group of turtles would be gone “Forever.”

Check out the updates from the Sea Turtle Protection Team in Punta Pargos in our latest newsletter.

So many people and organizations have helped us achieve this success. We certainly could not have done the work without your ongoing support. I want to send a big “thank-you” to all who have supported Sea Turtles Forever. It matters.

The 2025/2026 nesting season was a great success on Punta Pargos. The Sea Turtles Forever Patrol Team protected over 95% of nests from illegal harvest and secured 103 nests protecting 7830 eggs for hatch. Our work is reestablishing this devastated group of endangered turtles. We had 35 NEW turtles tagged that reached maturity and returned to nest this season, that was a big spike in turtles for Punta Pargos. Please help us prepare for the next round of nesting in October by sending any donation you can through our website. www.seaturtlesforever.org

I had a great day today teaching 17 awesome autistic teenagers from the Portland area about marine microplastic at Whale Park in Cannon Beach. They were very excited to learn about marine microplastic and the effect they have on our marine environment. Then we all ran filtration screens and made a difference for the beach, ocean and planet. It gave me great satisfaction to have those kids so excited to make a difference for the planet. They learned a lot and had a very beneficial day near the ocean, breathing the ocean air, in the sunshine, exercising and learning. This was the earliest we have been able to start filtration in 10 years due to the dry weather we have been having. I think God may have given us a gift and planned this day to happen for this very special group of kids. STF/Blue Wave 2026

This is Rhonda -- or JC 63 JC64 and she nested last night on Punta Pargos. Rhonda was originally tagged back in January 2019 when nesting and returned to nest again in January of 2022, she is back at it again in 2026. She is on a 3-4 year nesting cycle and came to a different beach than last time around. These tags give us very valuable data that helps us understand so much more about these Chelonia Mydas. She gave us another nice nest to secure for hatch! seaturtlesforever.org --- 2026

Tonight on Punta Pargos -- "Starlight" or JC 52 returned for her second nesting of the season. Yerson was there with her to monitor and protect the nest for hatch. William and Juan Carlos were also on the patrol and Bernardo is just north of this location. We have it covered, no eggs will be leaving the beach with the STF Team on patrol. This is what our hatch recoveries have looked like from 2008 until 2024 on Punta Pargos. We were also at 93% for 2025 season and will be updating this chart soon to show 2003 until present. STF 2026

A perfect hatch on Punta Pargos. This nest hatched out at 100% with 65 of 65 eggs hatching. It is rare for every egg to hatch and produce a baby turtle but our hatch rates have been exceptional on Punta Pargos hovering at around 93% overall for years. Even a 70% hatch recovery rate is good but our beaches on Punta Pargos are ideal for high hatch recovery. Also our team is super experienced and talented at handling the eggs when we translocate them to a safe spot hiding them from the poachers. STF 2026

This is "Starlight" or JC52 JC53 -- she showed up last night after being tagged during a nesting in 2019. So glad she found her way back home to the same beach she was tagged at. Normally these Sea Turtles nest every 3-5 years so she was a little bit late on this turn around. STF 2026

The Sea Turtles Forever runs nest area monitoring patrols just about every night of the nesting season which is 6-7 months long. This chart illustrates our 3400 patrols from 2008 until 2024. We started patrols in 2003 and are on the beach tonight so this is just a partial report that we will update soon with the total for all years but it gives you an idea of how determined we are to save this cohort of endangered sea turtles.
