North Coast Land Conservancy

North Coast Land Conservancy Helping to conserve Oregon’s coastal lands and waters, forever.

For more than 30 years, North Coast Land Conservancy has been preserving Oregon's vital coastal landscapes. We proudly manage conservation efforts on 52 unique properties, spanning over 2,100 acres along the North Oregon Coast—from Astoria to Lincoln City. We currently focus work around these important initiative areas:
1) Coastal Estuaries: Heart of the Coast
2) Columbia Quiet Waters: Rare Forest

ed Wetland Network
3) Neacoxie Wildlife Corridor: Connecting the Landscape and the People of the Clatsop Plains
4) Necanicum Wildlife Corridor: Connecting a Coastal Watershed
5) Coastal Edge: Grand Interface of Land and Sea

NCLC is always glad to have the flexibility to look at each individual property for its own ecological merits. Although we use initiatives to focus our work, sometimes a given property falls outside the bounds of one of our conservation initiatives but still meets a variety of other criteria, making it a high priority for conservation.

World Oceans Day is coming up June 8. What better way to celebrate than an outing to the beach along Cape Falcon Marine Reserve?

We’re kicking off the day with a special event at Neahkahnie Beach in Manzanita from noon to 2 p.m. Join us and our partners from Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) to learn more about our Marine Program and ODFW’s Nearshore Ecology Program! You’ll get to participate in a guided scavenger hunt, walk a sand labyrinth (created by sand artist Za, of Centerpoint Healing Arts), and enjoy a treat in celebration of Cape Falcon Marine Reserve’s 10th anniversary! We have a few spots left for this event, so sign up soon.

Later that day, there is World Oceans Day Trivia at Pelican Brewing in Cannon Beach from 5 to 7 p.m. We’re hosting this event along with ODFW and the Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP). Get together a team (no more than four) and join us!

You can learn more about both events and register at NCLCtrust.org!

We’re looking to recruit and train volunteers who want to support our Community Engagement Program!

Roles and responsibilities for volunteers include tabling at community events, as well as supporting NCLC’s Together in Nature (TIN) outings.

During the training event at Circle Creek Conservation Center (from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 26), we will:

• Learn about the TIN program
• Talk about the different volunteer roles
• Look at the upcoming TIN scheduled outings
• Do some role-playing and answer any questions

We’ll also demonstrate how NCLC tables at community events, and walk through signing up to volunteer, table setup, talking points and table breakdown! Hope you can join us 💚

Check out the native wildflowers blooming in the Clatsop Plains on the Oregon Coast! 💜

We saw both beautiful blue violet (Viola adunca) and Western buttercup (Ranunculus occidentalis) while conducting violet surveys last week.

And we are likely to find more wildflowers at Reed Ranch Habitat Reserve on Wednesday, during our stewardship work party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Want to come along? There are still spots open for volunteers! Check out nclctrust.org/events for more details and to sign up!

May is Broom Busting Month at North Coast Land Conservancy! Come help our stewardship team remove Scotch broom from Reed Ranch Habitat Reserve from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 13.

Scotch broom is an invasive shrub that threatens coastal prairie habitat by fixing nitrogen and forming a dense monoculture that can out-compete native plants. We could use some extra hands as we work to improve the habitat at this reserve in the Clatsop Plains.

Circle Creek Conservation Center will be closed for a private partner program from May 1 to 3. We kindly request people to not visit on these days. 💚

But then the reserve will be open to the public for the season on May 4! Be sure to check signage on-site before you head out on the Wetlands Walk, but we hope you enjoy this lovely natural wildlife area and find some peace in nature.

We hope you can join us for The Forest Remembers at 11 a.m. this Saturday at Circle Creek Conservation Center!

During this special program, we read aloud the names of all those who have been honored with memorial gifts to NCLC, this year and throughout our history. As the list grows, we are reminded of the human community that surrounds and connects us all. The generous memorial gifts we receive ensure that our legacy continues and that beautiful, healthy wildlife habitat will survive on the Oregon Coast for future generations.

“Memories of those whose lives are finished on this earth bring tears to those who are left behind; we come to the forest for solace and peace, for we remember, and the Forest Remembers.” — From “The Forest Remembers: Litany of Remembrance” by Kit Ketcham

Training today for our 2026 sea star surveys at Short Sand Beach, along the Cape Falcon Marine Reserve!

The sea star survey program is conducted in partnership with the Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network (MARINe). Volunteers visit the beach in shifts throughout the summer, surveying the rocks to find, identify and measure sea stars using a soft ruler. Volunteers also take photographs of any stars that seemed to be wasting.

Information on the sizes and types of sea stars, as well as whether they are sick or healthy, is returned to MARINe. The MARINe website contains a sea star map, updates, news and other resources.

The data gathered from these surveys enables the MARINe collective to assess the long-term, broad-scale impact of Sea Star Wasting Syndrome (SSWS)—or sea star wasting disease—on sea star populations and make predictions about recovery.

The red-flowering currant is popping off on the Oregon Coast this spring!

This beautiful shrub (Ribes sanguineum) is native to the Pacific Northwest. Its bright blooms are not only lovely to look at, they also attract hummingbirds and other pollinators.
