Kevin Johnson, Photo Archivist - Penobscot Marine Museum


Kevin will present selections from the 45,000-image Penobscot Marine Museum archive of the Kosti Ruohomaa Collection and enlighten us on the process of bringing this collection to digital life.

Kosti Ruohomaa was the only child of Finnish immigrant farmers, raised on a blueberry farm on Dodge Mountain Rockland, Maine. He was passionate about his subjects in his native Maine including farmers, fishermen, factory workers, families, loggers, artists, festival goers, hunters, and wild landscapes. Learn about his life’s path from farm to renowned freelance photographer with Black Star Agency where he was a contributor to many national magazines.
He continued his work until his death in 1961.

Please join us in welcoming our speaker, Jody Bachelder, on her book "HERE FIRST, Samoset and the Wawenock of Pemaquid, Maine."
Jody is a retired Midcoast Maine Librarian who has done a vast amount of research for this history and can tell us of some remarkable achievements of Samoset, a Sagomore of the Wawenock, who traveled from Midcoast Maine to Plymouth Plantation. He was the first Indigenous person to make contact in with the colonists of Plymouth Plantation in March of 1621, startling them when he emerged from the woods and spoke to them in English!

A short business meeting will follow.

Josiah Twitchell, Manager of AngelCom located in Belfast, will be our guest with an informative talk on "Scams and Fraud on the Internet". He'll also show us how to protect ourselves from some of that malware. With the upcoming Searsmont fiber optic internet connection availability, this will be a valuable presentation, and update, for everyone.

Followed by a short business meeting...there will be cookies.

Megan Pinette, President of the Belfast Historical Society and Museum, will be presenting "The Winters of Yesteryear, The Joys and Perils of Winter in Belfast." Megan is always a popular and interesting speaker.

A brief annual meeting will follow with the election of officers.

Rush DeNooyer, a Searsmont resident, will be showing his NOVA documentary "Hubble's Amazing Rescue". Airing on PBS, the documentary was written, produced, directed and narrated by Rush.

After 20 years in space and thousands of spectacular images, the Hubble Space Telescope was dying. The only hope to save it was a mission so dangerous that in 2004 NASA cancelled it because it was considered too risky. "Hubble's Amazing Rescue" is the compelling story of this dangerous 12-day mission and the years of preparation that made it happen.

Followed by a short business meeting and light refreshments.

Join us at our historical society barn for a guided tour by Ed Dodge, Vice President and Barn Curator. Ed holds a wealth of knowledge pertaining to our inventory, the majority donated by Searsmont residents.
Following the tour, there will be a short business meeting in the historical room followed by light refreshments.

Everyone is invited to attend!

FREE Oak and Glass Display Cases!
We were generously gifted two display cases with glass shelves. Unfortunately our space is limited, and they will not easily fit in our museum/meeting room. Cases are 80X26X38 and 70X24X40. We need these picked up from our SHS Barn no later than Friday, July 11. Thanks! PM or call Karen 207-322-5526.

Adi Philson, Community and Transportation Planner for the Midcoast Council of Governments, will be speaking about her role in this organization. She is committed to working with Maine communities and passionate about building a resilient and equitable future for her home state.

We are fortunate to have Adi as a Searsmont resident where she is involved in shaping the proposed Comprehensive Plan revision. Adi will present segment topics of the proposed plan at this meeting and solicit comments and feedback from our attendees. Please plan to attend!
