The LRPBA had a great meeting in Heber Springs where members learned about burn plans from Courtney Todd, Quail Forever AR Prescribed Fire Coordinator. Members gained knowledge of what a burn plan is and how to complete one for their property. To top it all off, we enjoyed Brother’s BBQ for dinner!

Please reach out if you are interested in joining. Dues are $25 per year and you get access to the PBAs burn trailer and members with years of burn experience. Our goal is to help members reach their management plans by conducting safe prescribed fires.

“Turkeys can persist in these denser, shaded forests, but they don’t reproduce as successfully, and fewer of their young survive. The lack of ground vegetation makes it hard for hens to hide their nests, and it limits food supplies for young turkey poults.
This isn’t just a problem for wild turkeys. Over the past 50 years, populations of bird species that live in open forests and grasslands have fallen by more that 50%. Land-dwelling bird species that depend on insects as food have declined by 2.9 billion individuals over the past 50 years, while those species that don’t have gained by 26.2 million individuals.”

Wild turkeys were overhunted across the US through the early 1900s, but made a strong comeback. Now, though, numbers are declining again. Two ecologists parse the evidence and offer an explanation.
