WHAT IS A POW WOW?
Some believe that the War dance Societies of the Ponca and other Southern Plains Tribes were the origin of the powwow. Another belief is that when the Native American tribes were forced onto reservations the government also forced them to have dances for the public to come and see. Before each dance, they were lead through the town in a parade, which is the beginning of the Grand Entry.
Today Pow Wows are organized by committees that work for weeks before the event. At the Pow Wow, the MC and Arena Director run the event. The MC works with the Arena Director to keep the Pow Wow organized and running smoothly. These two individuals along with the committee work hard to bring the people together to dance and fellowship together in the circle.
The Pow Wow begins with the Grand Entry. This is the entry of all the people entering the arena. This originally was a parade through the town thePow Wow was in. Even today in some Pow Wow, these parades are still held. During the Grand Entry, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the arena. The flags carried generally include the U.S. Flag, Tribal Flags, the POW Flag, and Eagle Staffs of various Native Nations present. These are usually carried by veterans. Native Americans hold the United States Flag in an honored position despite the horrible treatment received from this country. The flag has a dual meaning. First, it is a way to remember all of the ancestors that fought against this country. It is also the symbol of the United States which Native Americans are now a part. The flag here also reminds people of those people who have fought for this country.

Following the veterans are other important guests of the powwow including Tribal Chiefs, Princesses, Elders, and Pow Wow organizers. Next in line are the men dancers. The men are followed by the women dancers. Once everyone is in the arena, the song ends and a song is sung to honor the flags and the veterans. After a prayer, the dancing resumes, usually with a few round dances. After the round dances, intertribal dancing songs are sung and everyone dances to the beat of the drum. At contest Pow Wows, the dancers compete in dance and age categories for prizes.

The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in what is now the United States at least 15,000 years ago, possibly much earlier, from Asia via Beringia. A vast variety of peoples, societies and cultures subsequently developed. European colonization of the Americas, which began in 1492, resulted in a precipitous decline in Native American population because of new diseases, wars, ethnic cleansing, and enslavement. After its formation, the United States, as part of its policy of settler colonialism, continued to wage war and perpetrated massacres against many Native American peoples, removed them from their ancestral lands, and subjected them to one-sided treaties and to discriminatory government policies, later focused on forced assimilation, into the 20th century. Since the 1960s, Native American self-determination movements have resulted in positive changes to the lives of many Native Americans, though there are still many contemporary issues faced by them. Today, there are over five million Native Americans in the United States, 78% of whom live outside reservations: California, Arizona and Oklahoma have the largest populations of Native Americans in the United States. Most Native Americans live in small towns or rural areas.

The single went certified Gold selling over a million copies. It also made Redbone the first Native American band to reach the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, with the song reaching number 5.[1] Redbone achieved hits with their singles "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee", "The Witch Queen of New Orleans", "Wovoka", and "Maggie" in the United States, although these singles were more successful overseas

Chief Rushing Bear
Chief Rushing Bear was an Arikara Indian leader of the 19th century. His Arikara name, Kuunux-tuunawiinx or Kunuh-dunawenag, means "Rushing Bear," which he was commonly called in English; but the Arikaras more often referred to him by the honorific "Son of the Star" or "Son of Star." He was second-in-command under Chief White Shield, and took over the position of head chief of the Arikara tribe in the late 1860's until his death in 1881.

Rodney Arnold Grant (born March 9, 1959) is an American actor.
Rodney Arnold Grant, a Native American, was raised on the Omaha Reservation in Macy, Nebraska. He is probably most well known for his role as "Wind In His Hair" in the 1990 film Dances with Wolves. He has also appeared in other films such as John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars, Wild Wild West, Geronimo: An American Legend, White Wolves III: Cry of the White Wolf, Wagons East!, The Substitute, War Party, and Powwow Highway. In television, he played the part of "Chingachgook" in the series Hawkeye that aired in 1994-1995. He has also had guest roles in a television series such as Due South, Two, and the Stargate SG-1 episode "Spirits". He also portrayed the famous warrior Crazy Horse in the 1991 television movie Son of the Morning Star.
Rodney Arnold Grant is a member of the Omaha tribe of Nebraska. He has been very active in youth activities and had served on the Native American Advisory Board for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He has five grown children, three from a previous marriage, and two from previous relationships. He currently resides in southern California.
Mr Grant illustrates a clash of cultures here at an awards ceremony, by appearing in both the customary evening attire and a traditional headdress. Blessed are those who know themselves, and remember where they came from.
