It’s official but sad. U DA MAN has officially shuttered its doors.

Due to depleted Chinook counts in the Yaquina, Covid-19, aging and shrinking corp of volunteers and the lack of interest & initiative by local ODFW staff to assist in the rebuilding of Chinook stocks in the Yaquina system, the executive board has voted to discontinue U DA MAN FISHING TOURNAMENT and have dissolved the 501(c)3 status with the State of Oregon.

Donations of UDM purchased equipment and remaining funds have been made to the Port of Newport, Big Timber Rifle & Pistol Club, Cast for Kids and others in accordance with Oregon Administrative Rules.

UDM would like to thank all of the folks who volunteered with UDM over our 20+ year run, the countless local businesses and individuals who acted as sponsors over the years and our faithful participants who fished with us year after year.

Good luck on the river this fall and tight lines!

Tom Simpson, Secretary
UDM

PRESS RELEASE June 7th, 2020

The executive board of the U DA MAN Fishing Tournament has made the difficult decision to cancel the October tournament for the second year in a row. We had multiple deciding factors to consider. One factor in the decision is the continued low returns of Chinook salmon to the Yaquina River system. As stewards for this complex river system, we do not want to put additional fishing pressure on the depleted stocks of Chinook Salmon. A secondary factor in making the decision is the COVID 19 Pandemic. It is unknown what opening phase Lincoln County will be in by October. Our tournament can bring 200 plus people together and currently there is no assurance we would be able to properly socially distance at the venue we use at the Port of Newport facility at the South Beach Marina complex. A third factor in our decision, and one we all felt was even more important than whether or not we could have a large gathering, was the financial impact that the COVID 19 pandemic has had on the economy in our local community. The vast majority of our sponsors are small businesses that were either entirely closed or whom were only able to stay open with severe restrictions on them. All these businesses, and the families they support, suffered great economic loss. We could not justify asking for donations from these local vendors in their time of need.
We've listed our most recent sponsors and would encourage everyone in our communities to shop local and help rebuild our economy. We hope to return with our tournament in 2021 and look forward to seeing you then!

Please shop local and help rebuild our economy in Lincoln County!

U-DA-MAN lost one of the good ones last night when Frank Stout passed away. As a member of the Longview Hills Fishing Club he was always there to lend a helping hand, whether it was setting up tents for the tournament, selling raffle tickets and helping with registration, or helping to clean up after the tournament. His smiling face and wonderful upbeat attitude will be missed.

ODFW announced today that all-depths halibut season will open on May 21. With the desire to have time to make any process improvements before the start of Halibut, the Port of Newport will re-open the South Beach boat ramp on Thursday, May 14. In preparation for re-opening, the Port has added signage, made modifications to filet tables and is taking other steps as prescribed by the Governor. REMINDER: The RV Park continues to be closed to stays of less than 30 days unless special authorization is given by local officials. (The Lincoln County order closing hotels, motels, and campgrounds to short stays is in effect through the end of May. Anglers should be aware that local lodging is not available.) For details on the decision to re-open the boat ramp, read more here: www.portofnewport.com/files/56750ceb0/Port+announces+boat+launch+re-opening+May+14.pdf
