The Family Life Impact Questionnaire (FLIQ) was developed by Dr. Susanne Smith Roley and Dr. Zoe Mailloux to help clinicians understand how a child’s challenges affect everyday family life.

Rather than focusing only on isolated skills, the FLIQ invites us to look at participation across routines, relationships, social life, community involvement, and family plans.

This matters because occupational therapy is concerned with real life: the occupations, routines, and contexts that shape the child and family’s daily experience.

The FLIQ can support family-centered assessment, meaningful goal-setting, clinical reasoning, and outcome monitoring.

Because family life is not secondary to intervention.

“We don’t do SI in schools.” Have you ever heard this from your district? 🛑

School-based practitioners often feel pushback from districts when trying to recommend ASI services due to funding, space, or a lack of understanding from administrators.

Advocating for Ayres Sensory Integration® in schools can feel like an uphill battle, especially when faced with limited funding, small spaces, or administrators who don’t understand the evidence. But here is the truth: AOTA supports using a sensory integration frame of reference when sensory challenges limit a student’s ability to participate in their education.

You can advocate for the services your students actually need. The key is having the right data and knowing how to communicate it to your problem-solving and IEP teams. 🗣️📈

Our ASI in Schools course includes an entire module dedicated to Advocacy, complete with an Advocacy Toolkit designed specifically for the school-based OTP.

Ready to stop fighting the system and start transforming it? Join the next ASI in Schools cohort to get the evidence and tools you need.

EASI Update: Change to Tactile Perception Shapes (TP:S) 3D Printed Black Shapes

We have been conducting a research project to determine if it would be valid to exchange the black shapes that have been used for the Tactile Perception: Shapes Test with a printed response card instead. We have now finished the project and, as expected, using the response card does not change the results of the test so we are making this change.

The Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration (EASI) International Normative Data is currently under analysis for finalization of the tests. As decisions are made, they will be posted on the CLASI website.

When we talk about ASI in schools, we are not only talking about what happens in direct intervention.

We are also talking about the sensory and environmental conditions that shape participation throughout the school day.

Classrooms, corridors, cafeterias, playgrounds, assemblies, and transitions all carry sensory demands.

For some children, those demands are not secondary. They are a very substantial part of the challenge.

ASI-informed school-based practice helps us observe those conditions more clearly and make thoughtful decisions about how to support participation without over-simplifying the child’s needs.

If you want to learn more about using ASI reasoning in school contexts, join us in the new ASI in Schools course.

We have spaces available for our October 2026 cohort. May cohort sold out.

Now Selling: 3D Printed Oral Shapes
(For US Shipping ONLY)

In 2026, updated integrated shapes with bottle tops were introduced to streamline use and improve consistency. Therapists who previously purchased EASI kits with the original oral shapes may wish to update their materials with these new integrated shapes.

The Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration (EASI) is an open-access assessment. The test manual, score sheets, forms, supporting materials, and access to online scoring are made available to professionals who have completed training through programs approved by ICEASI. Testers are responsible for purchasing and organizing the materials needed to build their own EASI test kits.

This new product includes the oral shapes, corresponding water bottles, and cardboard holders used in EASI administration.

Access to Occupational Therapy using Ayres Sensory Integration® in schools is not just a clinical issue - it is also an advocacy issue.

When children have sensory integration needs, the services, goals, setting, and intervention approach written into the IEP matter. Goals should be measurable and meaningful. Interventions should be connected to the child’s needs and supported by evidence. And documentation is essential, not only to track progress, but to help families clearly communicate concerns, ask informed questions, and advocate for appropriate support.

In this conversation, we discuss why parents and occupational therapists need to understand the importance of documentation, evidence-based intervention, and access to appropriate OT services within the school system.
