"Lt. Gen. Frank E. Petersen Jr., the first ever black Marine Corps pilot, who fought endemic racism to rise to the rank of three-star general. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his performances on 64 combat missions in Korea. He also has a tour of duty in Vietnam, commanding a tactical air squadron in more than 250 missions followed in 1968, and he received the Purple Heart for being wounded when he had to eject because his plane was struck by anti-aircraft fire." General Petersen passed away in 2015.

On June 27, 2012, The Montford Point Marines (known as the 1st African-American Marines), received the Congressional Gold Medal.

These men (who were based out of North Carolina in World War II), served our country with courage and dedication, even in the face of discrimination and intolerance. There is no better way to celebrate the Marine Corps' birthday and Veterans Day than by honoring these men for their service and sacrifice and granting them the recognition that is 50 years overdue."
