This is a petition to get the lines redrawn to include the cities of Seabrook, Tx, Nassau Bay, Tx and El Lago, Tx in the TWIA coverage area for windstorm insurance. Dear Seabrook, El Lago & Nassau Bay,
Insurance rates have recently been rising exponentially. Specifically, we have found, windstorm insurance rates, seemed to have increased to a rate that it not only unreasonable but unattainable. We
live on the west side of Hwy 146 in Seabrook, which makes us ineligible for TWIA coverage. We were recently told, “Texas law gives the Commissioner of Insurance authority to change where TWIA coverage is available if the Commissioner determines that windstorm and hail insurance coverage is not reasonably available to a substantial number of property owners in the area.”
After research and many phone calls and emails, we spoke with the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) and learned that Seabrook, El Lago and Nassau Bay (or any city) can petition to be added to this coverage map through a petition. The city needs to gather letters from individual homeowner’s, homeowner’s associations and businesses then mail them as a group to the department of insurance to form a single petition. The petition will be reviewed to decide if the area will be added to the TWIA coverage area. We need letters from all of the following Seabrook, El Lago and Nassau Bay residents: condo owners/renters, condo HOA, individual homeowners, business owners, apartment renters, apartment management and insurance agents. (There are posts for each city with links for each letter as well as a test account if you would like to see the letters before committing to submitting your own letter.) We need to collect as many letters as possible. My goal is 500 from each city. When the electronic letters are completed, they will be sent to me to be collected as a pdf to be sent to TDI. If you would like to write your own letter, please email me at [email protected] for instructions. Please complete your letters to Natchez Landing no later than June 1, 2022. All the letters collected from everyone in Seabrook, El Lago or Nassau Bay who participates will be mailed as a complete petition. Per TDI, it is pertinent that all letters associated with this petition and matter arrive at the same time, in one packet. We have also crafted sample letters in a test account. You can use these letters to see if you are comfortable with the process or to print out a sample to use to write your own paper letter.
