Greene County Development Corporation and Ames Regional Economic Alliance hosted Congressman Zach Nunn in Jefferson, Iowa, on August 3 touring both American Athletic, Inc. (AAI/Spalding) and the Jeffersonian apartment redevelopment project by Chris and Tracy Deal. Local state legislators State Representative Carter Nordman, State Senator Jesse Green, city, county officials and local business leaders participated as well.
At AAI/Spalding, Nunn met with company leaders learning about the Jefferson-based manufacturer whose athletic equipment is distributed worldwide. He highlighted the company as an example of “American ingenuity,” praising Iowa manufacturing and noting that recent federal tax and reinvestment policies are helping businesses expand and create jobs.
Nunn also toured the Jeffersonian, the ongoing redevelopment of the former Jefferson middle school into 25 apartments, ranging from studios to three-bedroom units. Project leaders Chris and Tracy Deal explained the years-long effort to transform the historic 1920 building into much-needed housing.
He praised the project as a successful collaboration among the city, county, school district, and local residents. He noted that converting the vacant school into affordable housing helps address community needs while preserving a landmark building.
During the visit, Nunn focused on two key themes: supporting Iowa manufacturing through companies like AAI/Spalding and encouraging rural housing and community revitalization through projects like the Jeffersonian. He praised both as examples of local investment creating economic opportunities and strengthening communities in Greene County using regional partnerships.
