The SCOPE Foundation

The SCOPE Foundation The SCOPE Foundation supports the children of Santa Luisa, a Catholic Vincentian school, and a center of hope for the children of San Salvador.

The SCOPE Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity which chooses to make a commitment to the poor through supporting education in El Salvador. The Santa Luisa School is a Catholic Vincentian institution that educates the boys and girls of today with respect and dignity, so that in the future they will make responsible decisions promoting democracy, academic achievement and their full potential. e Santa Luisa School has provided children from San Salvador, El Salvador’s poorest families with an education rooted in the Gospels for more than 80 years. The school has survived the increasingly tough surroundings. It has weathered the country’s horrific civil war from the late 1970s until the early 1990s. Santa Luisa was blessed to receive occasional visits from martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was beatified by Pope Francis in 2015. The school’s existence in a rough market neighborhood of the inner city has been essential. For many of its students, this school represents their best chance to break out of the cycle of poverty that surrounds them. But while the school’s 80th anniversary has passed, it still survives on a year-to-year basis. A lack of families able to pay the school’s meager tuition has caused the school to rely more on outside help. Santa Luisa currently is struggling just to meet its budget for this school year.

Today is St. Oscar Romero's birthday. In the prayer attributed to St. Oscar Romero, let us remember

"This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water the seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities.

We cannot do everything and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something and to do it well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own."

"This July 31 marks the 50th anniversary of Fr. Pedro Arrupe’s famous “Men for Others” address. In it he challenged Jesuit school alumni to form what we now embrace as “people for others,” those “who cannot even conceive of love of God which does not include love for the least of their neighbors.”'

A Prayer for Blessed Rutilio Grande
by Sr. Dianna Ortiz, O.S.U.

God of Justice, with the people of El Salvador, we remember Bl. Rutilio Grande’s compassion and love for the poor and disenfranchised.

May we learn from his example to be shoulders of comfort and rest for those walking through storms of persecution and injustice.

May we learn from his example to be prophetic and pastoral witnesses where we are led by the voices of the poor and the everyday leaders in our communities.

May we learn from his example to be credible signs of hope in a world divided by conflict and the carnage of violence, and may we learn from Bl. Grande and other martyrs that the sins of El Salvador’s violent past can serve as a vehicle of change for the common good, shape our actions as servant leaders, and build a culture of love, respect, and nonviolence.

Amen.

"The Jesuit priest and martyr Rutilio Grande, S.J., was born on this day in 1928 in El Salvador. He was assassinated in 1977 alongside two fellow Salvadorans before the start of the Salvadoran Civil War.

A close friend of Saint Óscar Romero, Blessed Rutilio encouraged faith in action, saying that if Christ is not to remain in the clouds, "the Gospel has to grow little feet." He lived this out through his dedication to serving the economically poor and by speaking out against government oppression.

Blessed Rutilio Grande, S.J., pray for us!"
