FY 2027 Firefighter Training Schedule Planning Underway
The Mason County Firefighter Training Committee has begun developing the FY 2027 training schedule. While the committee remains in the early stages of planning, a diverse lineup of training opportunities is being considered to support firefighter safety, operational effectiveness, leadership development, and specialized rescue capabilities.
The following courses are currently planned for the upcoming fiscal year:
VFIS Driver Training
This course is designed to enhance the safe operation of emergency vehicles through a combination of classroom instruction and practical driving exercises. Topics include defensive driving techniques, emergency response considerations, vehicle dynamics, risk management, and reducing preventable apparatus accidents. The training emphasizes the responsibility of emergency vehicle operators to balance rapid response with the safety of firefighters and the public.
VFIS ATV/UTV Driver Training
As all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) become increasingly common in emergency response operations, this course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate these specialized vehicles. Training will focus on vehicle capabilities and limitations, terrain evaluation, safe operating practices, loading and transport considerations, and emergency response applications in off-road environments.
Live Fire Search and Rescue
Presented by Oakland Community College
This hands-on training program provides firefighters with the opportunity to conduct realistic search and rescue operations in a live fire environment. Participants will strengthen their skills in fireground decision-making, victim search techniques, firefighter survival, team coordination, and operating under stressful conditions. The training is designed to replicate real-world fireground scenarios while emphasizing safety, communication, and tactical effectiveness.
ASD Across Genders: Considerations for High-Risk Encounters
Presented by Spectrum Training Solutions
This course will provide first responders with an increased understanding of interacting with individuals from diverse gender identities during emergency incidents and high-risk encounters. Participants will explore communication strategies, legal considerations, situational awareness, and techniques for maintaining professionalism and safety while delivering effective emergency services. The training aims to improve responder confidence and support positive interactions with all community members.
The New Kids Are Here: How to Lead Gen Z Without Becoming a Meme
Presented by Spectrum Training Solutions
As more members of Generation Z enter the fire service workforce and volunteer ranks, effective leadership and mentorship become increasingly important. This engaging leadership course examines generational differences, communication styles, recruitment and retention strategies, workplace expectations, and methods for developing strong team cultures. Participants will gain practical tools for leading younger firefighters while fostering collaboration and organizational success.
Ice Rescue Technician Certification
This certification course is intended for firefighters and rescue personnel who respond to incidents involving frozen waterways. The program will cover ice characteristics, hazard recognition, rescue equipment, self-rescue techniques, victim recovery methods, and operational safety procedures. Through classroom and practical exercises, participants will develop the skills necessary to safely and effectively perform ice rescue operations while minimizing risk to rescuers and victims.

Training dates, locations, and registration information are currently being finalized. Additional courses may be added as planning efforts continue. The Mason County Firefighter Training Committee remains committed to providing high-quality educational opportunities that enhance firefighter safety, strengthen operational capabilities, and support the professional development of fire service personnel throughout Mason County.
