Big day for our Mason County Firefighter Academy cadets! All seventeen completed their hands‑on practical testing — twelve stations covering everything from SCBA checks to fire streams to knot skills.

Now it’s time for the toughest part: waiting on those written exam results. Send them some encouragement as they push toward graduation!

The group reported feeling confident after tackling the 200‑question test.

They’ll be back Saturday morning for their final classroom session of the 2025–2026 academy, where they’ll take on the practical skills exam—twelve stations designed to test their hands‑on firefighting abilities.

We’re proud of their hard work and dedication as they move one step closer to certification.

Week 19 and HazMat Ops in the rearview is no small feat.

Hazardous Materials Operations is one of those blocks that really separates “learning to be a firefighter” from “thinking like one.” It forces cadets to slow down, size up, and make decisions that protect not just themselves but the entire community.

A couple things stand out about what you described:
🔥 The blend of classroom and hands‑on work
HazMat is one of those subjects where the classroom gives you the language — zones, placards, containers, PPE levels — but the hands‑on day is where it clicks. Saturday’s practicals are usually the moment when cadets realize how different it feels to operate in PPE, communicate through masks, and work methodically under pressure.

🧪 Why HazMat Ops matters
Even in a smaller county, firefighters run into hazardous materials more often than people think:
• Vehicle accidents with fuel spills
• Natural gas leaks
• Household chemical incidents
• Industrial or agricultural exposures
• Unknown substances during medical calls

Ops-level training gives cadets the ability to recognize, isolate, and protect, which is exactly what keeps a bad situation from becoming a disaster.

Fire Academy Week 18 Update

Week 18 marked an exciting transition for the cadets as they wrapped up their short break from the classroom and shifted back into structured instruction. Even during the break, the group stayed sharp by meeting for hands‑on practical skill reviews—proof that their commitment hasn’t wavered as they move deeper into the academy.

This week kicked off one of the most anticipated segments of the program: Hazardous Materials Operations training. HazMat Ops is consistently a favorite among cadets, blending technical knowledge with dynamic, scenario‑based learning.

The course is being led by Bruce Pelletier, a name well known across Mason County’s firefighting community. True to form, Bruce has brought his signature style—plenty of live demonstrations, real‑world examples, and the kind of energy that keeps everyone locked in. He’s joined by Assistant Chief Todd VanNortwick of the Riverton Township Fire Department, whose experience and instructional approach complement Bruce’s perfectly.

Together, they’re guiding the cadets through the critical skills needed to safely identify, manage, and mitigate hazardous materials incidents. The combination of strong instruction and enthusiastic students has made for a productive and motivating week.

With HazMat Ops underway, the academy is entering one of its most impactful training phases yet. The cadets continue to show growth, discipline, and teamwork as they move closer to graduation.

🔥 Supporting Our Firefighters & Their Families 🔥

This morning, twenty firefighters and several spouses took part in the Zero to 60: Career Survival & Emotional Wellness training. Huge thanks to the City of Ludington Fire Department for hosting and to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for making it possible through grant funding.

Mental health matters—on the job and at home. Investing in emotional wellness strengthens our firefighters and the families who stand behind them.

We’re grateful for Mike and Anna from 2 The Rescue for delivering such an impactful course. Highly recommended!

Mason County Firefighter I & II Academy Week Seventeen Update

Week seventeen brought another big step forward for our cadets. They spent the week diving into the fundamentals of first aid and getting hands‑on with vehicle extrication, learning how to safely and efficiently remove patients from damaged vehicles. These are skills they’ll rely on often, since each cadet already assists their home department on medical calls and traffic accidents.

The next two weeks will serve as a working break—no formal classes, but plenty of time for instructors to help cadets sharpen both their classroom knowledge and practical techniques.

Once they return, they’ll gear up for the final push: Hazardous Materials Operations.

🔥 Mason County Firefighter I & II Academy – Week Sixteen Update 🔥

Our firefighter cadets have wrapped up Week Sixteen of the academy! This week’s training focused on Incident Command and the Life Safety Initiatives, giving the cadets a stronger foundation in the systems that keep both responders and the public safe.

On Saturday morning, the cadets were back on the training grounds, putting in hands‑on work to sharpen the skills they’ll need for their upcoming practical exam—and, more importantly, for real‑world operations on the fireground.

With just about a month and a half left before their final written and practical exams, the cadets are pushing hard and showing impressive dedication. Keep cheering them on as they head into the home stretch!
