🇺🇸 81 Years Ago Today — The Flag Raising on Mount Suribachi
On February 23, 1945, six U.S. Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, creating one of the most iconic images in history. Joe Rosenthal’s photograph became a lasting symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the spirit of the Marine Corps.
The Battle of Iwo Jima was among the Pacific’s fiercest—nearly 7,000 Americans were killed and over 19,000 wounded. Their bravery on that volcanic island showed the world what Admiral Nimitz meant when he said, “Uncommon valor was a common virtue.”
Today, we honor their courage and remember the meaning behind that flag.
Semper Fidelis. 🇺🇸
