2ND Annual Creatures Great & Small Festival at Scottsville Pavilion Sept 15

A dozen animal rescue and welfare groups from throughout Central Virginia will be gathering at the Scottsville Pavilion on Sunday September 15 between 12 noon and 4 pm to exhibit rescued animals available for adoption or fostering, and to educate the public regarding the groups' lifesaving programs. This Second Annual Creatures Great & Small Festival will showcase not only cats, dogs, puppies and kittens but also horses, donkeys, bunnies, pigs, goats and more.
The Festival will feature an ongoing Blessing of the Animals (12:30-3pm), a mega raffle to benefit the exhibiting groups, a Best-Exhibit-of-Festival contest to be decided by attendee ballot, and live music (2pm-3:30pm). There will be numerous opportunities for animal selfie photos and meet-and-greets with miniature horses, baby donkeys, bunnies and many other creatures. And several food trucks will be offering barbecue, hot sandwiches, Turkish street food, vegetarian tacos, ices and funnel cake.
Organized by the James River Good Works Group, the Second Annual Creatures Great & Small Festival is free, and pets are welcome. For more info, go to www.facebook.com/jrgoodworks or james-river-good-works-group.square.site.

2024 Scottsville Blood Drive Named “Blood Drive of the Week”

The American Red Cross has recognized the May 11, 2024 Scottsville Blood Drive organized by the James River Good Works Group (JRGW) as “Blood Drive of the Week.” The Group's 2025 Scottsville Blood Drive is scheduled for May 10, 2025.

American Red Cross Regional Services Executive Todd Cahill characterized the blood drive organized by the James River Good Works Group as “a terrific example of what makes a drive successful.” When James River Good Works Group volunteers sat down with American Red Cross staffers to plan the first Scottsville Blood Drive in several years, a goal was set to collect 25 pints of blood. By the end of the May 11 Drive held at the Scottsville United Methodist Fellowship Hall, 28 collected pints had exceeded that benchmark.

To achieve that result, JRGW Blood Drive Coordinator Kathryn Arbuthnott led 6 JRGW volunteers to sign up 49 people in advance to donate blood. “Attrition really cut down the number of actual blood donors,” she pointed out. “So we're super thankful for the extra hard work of our volunteers that made it possible for us to beat our 25-pint goal,” she added.

The 2024 Scottsville Blood Drive was a joint project of the American Red Cross (operations), Scottsville United Methodist Men (venue facilitation) and James River Good Works Group (organization). JRGW is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt network of volunteers dedicated to improving the community and helping neighbors in need. Helping Hands Food Drive Collects Almost 900 Items for Scottsville's Needy

The Helping Hands Year End Food Drive concluded on December 28 after gathering 895 food cans, dry goods boxes and essential hygiene item packs for distribution to needy families in the Scottsville area. The December-long joint effort was organized by James River Good Works Group. Bread of Life handled distribution and the Town of Scottsville provided logistics.

Collection bins were hosted by Baine's Books & Coffee, Baked by the James, Rivertown Antiques, Tru1st Bank, W.F. Paulett/Ace Hardware, and the Scottsville Library, Town Office and Post Office. “We thank these supporters, the 12 volunteers that made this project work, and all the generous folks that helped fill our collection bins” said project leader Melodye Courter. “Scottsville really stepped up for this good work,” she concluded.
