James River Boys & Girls Club Our goal is to serve youth and positively impact their lives in the areas of academic success, healthy lifestyles, and citizenship and service.

In 2012, a visionary group of community volunteers recognized the need for fun, positive, and affordable out-of-school activities for youth in the Albemarle, Buckingham, and Fluvanna areas. They saw an opportunity through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia (BGCCVA) and set their minds on starting a Club. Thanks to their efforts, a generous group of donors, and the commitment of the BGCCVA board of directors, the James River Club opened its doors to 125 young people, ages 6 to 18, on June 16, 2014, at the Old Scottsville School. The Club will be open when kids need us most – all day during the summer and after school. Our goal is to serve even more youth and positively impact their lives in the areas of academic success (on-time graduation), healthy lifestyles, and citizenship and service.

Another fun week at the James River Club!

Our members were busy building, creating, and working together!

K–2 members tackled the Tallest Tower Challenge and other team-building activities, putting their creativity and teamwork to work!

3rd–4th grade members got creative with paper foam, designing their own masks and monsters! They used their imaginations to create unique designs while exploring creativity and self-expression.

Our teens visited Boys & Girls Club–Albemarle Campus for the Junior Youth of the Year & Youth of the Year Carnival, learning about leadership opportunities while enjoying carnival games and activities!

Another incredible week at the James River Club!

From hands-on learning to exciting adventures, our members made the most of every day!

Our K–2 members harvested the potatoes they planted earlier this summer! Watching them dig up the fruits of their hard work was a wonderful lesson in patience, responsibility, and where our food comes from. 🌱 🥔

UpLevel Family Martial Arts - Charlottesville joined us for a couple of engaging martial arts sessions. Through fun, interactive activities, members practiced confidence, focus, and respect while staying active and learning new skills. Thank you to the UpLevel team for investing in our youth! 🥋

We wrapped up the week with a trip to Carter Mountain Orchard! Members enjoyed a scenic hayride through the orchard, sampled refreshing peach c***r and delicious apple c***r donuts, and picked fresh peaches to take home. It was the perfect way to spend a beautiful summer day while creating memories with friends! 🍑🍎

🔥 HUGE shoutout to Instructor Peters, Instructor Yates, and their incredible team from UpLevel Family Martial Arts - Charlottesville for bringing the energy to our Club! 🥋💥

Our members had an amazing time learning real self-defense skills—practicing blocking techniques, using their voices with confidence to stand up for themselves, and even learning the open-palm strike as a last resort.

And the best part? They got HANDS-ON! From striking pads, to breaking boards, to battling it out with pool noodles—our members were all in and loving every minute of it! 💪

Thank you for helping empower our youth with confidence, awareness, and skills they can carry with them every day. We appreciate you! 🙌💙

🌱🥔 Exciting things are growing at the Club! 🥔🌱

Over the past two weeks, our K–2nd grade members have been getting their hands dirty (in the best way!) by planting potato eyes in our flower box. Today, they were thrilled to spot the very first sprouts pushing through the soil!

With a freeze warning on the way, our young gardeners jumped right into action—carefully adding a layer of soil over the sprouts to help protect them from the cold.

Along the way, members had the opportunity to work with soil, manure, and gardening tools to make sure their planting space was just right. They’re learning firsthand what it takes to grow their own food, and we couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and teamwork! 🌿💪
