James River Boys & Girls Club Our goal is to serve youth and positively impact their lives in the areas of academic success, healthy lifestyles, and citizenship and service.

In 2012, a visionary group of community volunteers recognized the need for fun, positive, and affordable out-of-school activities for youth in the Albemarle, Buckingham, and Fluvanna areas. They saw an opportunity through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia (BGCCVA) and set their minds on starting a Club. Thanks to their efforts, a generous group of donors, and the commitment of the BGCCVA

board of directors, the James River Club opened its doors to 125 young people, ages 6 to 18, on June 16, 2014, at the Old Scottsville School. The Club will be open when kids need us most – all day during the summer and after school. Our goal is to serve even more youth and positively impact their lives in the areas of academic success (on-time graduation), healthy lifestyles, and citizenship and service.

🔥 HUGE shoutout to Instructor Peters, Instructor Yates, and their incredible team from UpLevel Family Martial Arts - Charlottesville for bringing the energy to our Club! 🥋💥

Our members had an amazing time learning real self-defense skills—practicing blocking techniques, using their voices with confidence to stand up for themselves, and even learning the open-palm strike as a last resort.

And the best part? They got HANDS-ON! From striking pads, to breaking boards, to battling it out with pool noodles—our members were all in and loving every minute of it! 💪

Thank you for helping empower our youth with confidence, awareness, and skills they can carry with them every day. We appreciate you! 🙌💙

🌱🥔 Exciting things are growing at the Club! 🥔🌱

Over the past two weeks, our K–2nd grade members have been getting their hands dirty (in the best way!) by planting potato eyes in our flower box. Today, they were thrilled to spot the very first sprouts pushing through the soil!

With a freeze warning on the way, our young gardeners jumped right into action—carefully adding a layer of soil over the sprouts to help protect them from the cold.

Along the way, members had the opportunity to work with soil, manure, and gardening tools to make sure their planting space was just right. They’re learning firsthand what it takes to grow their own food, and we couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and teamwork! 🌿💪

🌟 Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia Teens Give Back! 🌟

Our teens at the James River Boys & Girls Club are stepping up to make a difference through the 2025 Community Food Drive! 🥫💙

They’re collecting non-perishable food items (like canned goods, pasta, peanut butter, and soups) to help feed families right here in our community.

📍 Drop-off Locations:
You can find collection bins not only at the Club (250 Page St, Scottsville, VA 24590) but also at local businesses around Scottsville — so it’s easy to donate while you’re out and about!

All donations will go directly to the Bread of Life and B.F. Yancey Community Food Pantries, helping make sure no family goes hungry this season.

Our amazing 3rd and 4th graders got a special visit this week from our talented Art Specialist, Ms. Sigrid — and just look at what they created! 🖌️✨

From a bright yellow base coat that became a ladybug-covered picnic table 🐞 to a stunning rainbow bench 🌈, our young artists transformed everyday furniture into bold, beautiful works of art. This hands-on project gave them the chance to express their creativity, collaborate with friends, and leave a colorful, lasting mark on our Club.

Today, JRC Members visited the Boys & Girls Club-Albemarle Campus Club for BGCCVA's STEM Olympics! While there, members enjoyed interacting with members of different Clubs in our area, as well as the variety of STEM activities available!

They also got the opportunity to see a familiar face working the check-in table!
