I know you can buy fruit anywhere these days BUT Allen County Farm Bureau has been offering fresh fruit and nuts to members at a great price from WAY back when it wasn’t easy to buy here! Follow the money! $5000 in 2026 AC-S H scholarships—4th Grade Farm Safety Day funding—grants for 4H, FFA, the County Fair livestock show, Legislative Appreciation, youth development, rural health and safety, Young Farmer programs and support of the Generation Bridge age farmers. The money didn’t really go anywhere. The Allen County Farm Bureau Board chooses to invest it here. And it was all celebrated at the annual members’ meeting this week! Grow not weary in your well doing!

Faith. Family. Farming. Few people do it all like Melinda Downing of Downing Cattle Company. Many lovely members of her family attended Allen County Farm Bureau’s annual members’ meeting to see Melinda honored as Farm Woman of the Year! Yes, Melinda is quick to say “it takes us all pulling together” (and Jeff is quick to quip “I saw that girl had potential back in the early 80’s and thought maybe a good husband could really make her shine”) but we say, “Praise God for a virtuous woman!” We join Jeff and her family and the farm bureau members in congratulating her. Melinda we rise up and called you blessed.

Teaching them diligently. Teachers have more and more to do each year. Lindsay Howell of the Intermediate Center does it all AND stresses to her students that everything they eat and much of what they wear starts out on someone’s farm. Maybe you grew up knowing that but not all kids grow up with your advantages these days! Allen County Farm Bureau recognized Lindsay’s successful teaching with the Excellence in Agriculture Literacy award. Lindsay, thank you and best wishes for a great rest of the school year!

OUTSTANDING! Payton Towe of Nik A Da Farm Supply and President of ACS FFA Chapter earned the Outstanding Farm Youth honor at Allen County Farm Bureau’s annual meeting. Get this: I asked how her day had been, she reeled off all kinds of hard work that she’d done but finished with “I’m so thankful for my folks, they are home right now doing my feeding so I could get here on time.” A person who could understandably be tooting her own horn: Honoring her parents. Being grateful. I love that. THAT’s the kinda young people Allen County is raising.

GRASSROOTS! Everything Kentucky Farm Bureau does starts with local voices. The Allen County Farm Bureau held their annual meeting this week and the 150 attendees voted on resolutions to send to the state organization, elected officers, heard reports, honored local ag-leaders of all ages, shared a BUNCHA door prizes and had a great meal!

OLIVER! A family with deep roots and strong branches in Allen County! Descendants of Seagle and Helen Weaver-Oliver were honored as Allen County Farm Bureau Federation’s Legacy Farm Family for 2026. No way to recount them all but descendants include honored names here like Sue Erwin, Reilus Oliver, Shirley Pitchford, A. R. Oliver—yes the road is named for this county judge and farmer—Tabors, Weavers, Williams all have family ties to Olivers! From Seagle’s grandfather John Shelby Oliver love of family and farm life have been passed down from one generation of Olivers to the next and each generation has provided servant-leaders to Allen County Agriculture. Ferrrell—former ag educator and Mitch of Allen County Farmers Service accepted gifts that the family will display at the annual Oliver Reunion. When you run across any folks from this family let them know their contributions to our community are appreciated!

FORTIFIED ROOFS! They are more expensive and you must find a certified installer but a customer just installed one and took a $5000 deductible and it cut her home premium in half! Might wanna research those if you plan a new roof!
