The Vervet Forest A Vision of the Vervet Monkey Foundation to create a wildlife reserve for Vervet Monkeys in South Af
(2)

The Vervet Forest is a project by the Vervet Monkey Foundation, a non-profit rehabilitation and rescue centre for Vervet monkeys established in 1993 in Tzaneen, Limpopo South Africa. Sadly many vervets are orphaned each year in South Africa by farmers or residents shooting them, snared, poisoned, used in traditional medicine or killed on the road by cars. The goal of the Vervet Forest is to create

a several hundred-acre nature reserve that will act as a release site for the rehabilitated monkeys of the Vervet Monkey Foundation where these orphans can be free from human conflict, as well as an education centre to prevent human-wildlife conflict. The Vervet Monkey Foundation is internationally accredited by PASA & GFAS and advocates against keeping any primate as a pet. The Vervet Forest began as a documentary and has been on National Geographic channel's as "Little Monkey House." The film follows the story of five orphans at the VMF and sets the stage for why we need the forest and the habitat destruction that is occurring in South Africa. The Vervet Forest is also now a weekly Youtube show all about the orphans of baby season, following their journey through the monkey foster mother program and how they are rehabilitated into monkey troops. Curious Observer 💚

The wild troop babies are becoming more independent, adventurous and curious. Whether you’re carrying food, collecting bottles or simply walking by, there’s often a tiny face peeking through the leaves keeping a close eye on what you’re doing.

This little one was carefully watching from the trees above, making sure not to miss a thing 🌳

Tongue Out Tuesday 😝

This Tuesday, we’re featuring Pointy Face!

Pointy is a 16-year-old female in Engeltjie troop and she certainly knows how to pull a funny face. We caught her showing off her tongue for the camera and couldn’t resist making her this week’s Tongue Out Tuesday star 🌟

Maddie Monday 👑

It’s Monday, which means it’s time for another Maddie update.

Last week, Maddie headed back to the vets after a flare-up left us all feeling a little worried. She had been losing weight quickly and spending most of her time curled up on hot water bottles rather than causing mischief.

The good news is that Josie and the vets came up with a new treatment plan, and so far we’re seeing some positive signs. Maddie has gained a little weight and her appetite is improving, although she’s still a long way from where we’d like her to be.

As always with Maddie, there are good days and tougher days. Sometimes we catch glimpses of the cheeky, playful monkey she should be, climbing around and showing more interest in the world around her. Other times, she still prefers the comfort of a warm cuddle and a quiet nap.

We’re taking every small win as it comes and hoping this new treatment plan continues to help strengthen Maddie 💪

Keep fighting, Mads. We’re all rooting for you 💕

Gigi’s Growing Up 🩷

Gigi arrived at the foundation in November after her mum was shot. She was frightened and unsure of her new world, but even then she had a feisty, independent streak.

She joined Georgie and Farli in Koko troop, and the three girls are doing super well. Gigi still likes to do things on her own terms, but more often than not you’ll find the trio together, exploring, playing and growing up side by side.

Watching their little faces darken and their fur turn golden is such a privilege. It’s a reminder that these girls have been given a second chance to grow up as they should: surrounded by their own kind, free to climb and experience love again 🫶

As we prepare for another baby season starting this October, we know there are more little ones like Gigi out there who will need that same second chance. By volunteering with us, you become part of their journey - helping frightened, orphaned babies find safety, friendship and a future among their own kind.
