We are excited to welcome Deputy Chief John Haseney of the FDNY to speak at the Firefighter48 Cancer Summit.
Chief Haseney has served with the FDNY since 2005. He began his career with Ladder 43 and went on to serve as a Lieutenant in Engine 287, Captain in Engine 38, and Battalion Chief in Battalion 44. He is now assigned to Division 14. Deputy Chief Haseney holds a Bachelor of Science in Fire Science from John Jay College and a master’s degree in Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also served in the New York Army National Guard from 2004 to 2012 and is a combat veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
He is a founding and active member of the FDNY Contamination Reduction Workgroup, which has led efforts since 2017 to reduce firefighter exposure to fireground contaminants. As part of this work, he has been instrumental in initiatives that directly protect firefighters, including leading FDNY’s Skin Cancer Screening Initiative, which has already screened over 1,000 firefighters and identified more than 250 potential cancers. He also serves as FDNY’s liaison on multiple critical research studies, including the IAFF/IAFC Wellness and Fitness Initiative, Women Firefighter Study, and Electric Battery Fire Study. In addition, he contributes to the national conversation on firefighter health as an alternate member of NFPA 1585 and NFPA 1580.
