Well - this adventure/fund raiser for beCAUSE of Q is over. We drew the fifth card two nights ago then spent yesterday and today exploring Wisconsin. We ended the ride in Eau Claire instead of Grand Rapids so Bob could visit/help with family. We met plenty of great people along the way and here’s a shout out to everybody who sponsored the ride! Until next year!!

Yesterday Bob and I covered about 425 miles, most of it across Ontario. Blueberry picking along the way seemed appropriate. We crossed back into the US at Sault St Marie then made our way to Clarke Campground off Highway 28. This is a fantastically entertaining campground with some friendly owners. The owners have two bars connected by an underground bunker. It is serve yourself and just throw some money in the tip jar. The exit into the second bar from underground is up through an outhouse style toilet. They have a massive bonfire every night and they also do a bowling ball drop from a lookout tower into s bucket of flaming fuel/water mix. I think we finally went to bed around 0145 hours.

Today was a special day for the Goetz family as three sisters and I returned some of my moms ashes to her family’s (Falardeau) plot in Quebec City, Canada. She was born and raised in Quebec City and today was her birthday. An unidentified individual “requisitioned” some flowers for the spot. Bob and I then began the 1,300 mile route back to the Midwest. While traveling through Montreal we received tornado warning alerts followed by a massive downpour and the beginning of a tornado spout. We raced to the nearby building and were invited inside by some lovely nurses. The location turned out to be a Covid 19 shot site. After declining a sixth shot we sat around and talked. Later we were repeatedly dumped on and at one point Bob was so wet that he changed everything. Today we also entered our final Provence, Ontario. We’ve found a campsite for the night and are sitting by a fire winding down. Tomorrow we shoot for 400 miles.

Today Bob and I crossed into Canada and high tailed it to Old Quebec City. We met with three of my sisters Gisele, Michele, and Renee as well as Michele’s family. From there it was a walking tour of the walled city including the Citadel, the Chateau Frontenac, the boardwalk, artist alley and more. Dinner included Quebec staples like Shepherd’s pie, meat pie and more. There is a lot of history here as well as monuments and statues to that history. All in all a great day!

Bob and I have crossed into Vermont, our last state for this trip. Next it’s on to Quebec City and the fourth card draw. Bob had been looking forward to riding the Kancamagus Highway and it was a hoot! There were rivers, ponds, old bridges and generally fantastic scenery. We saw lots of results from the storm that went through two days ago, including washed out roads and flooding. The Winooski River, in Burlington, was a raging torrent. Bob and Blanches friend, Chris, was an incredible host and we enjoyed her tour, hospitality and beCAUSE of Q pie that Chris made for us (strawberry and rhubarb).

Today Bob and I covered approximately 200 miles thru Massachusetts, New Hampshire and into Maine, partly in search of a perfect lobster roll. We found it at The Weathervane Seafood Restaurant in Maine. That was only after riding 150 of the 200 miles thru the rain storms hitting the northeast. Let’s just say that everything got soaked and our hotel room looks like a laundromat. Bob found a hair dryer and is trying to dry out his shoes. The whirlpool bath awaits him.

Today Bob and I crossed through New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut and into Rhode Island. New Jersey obviously does not like tourists because there was no parking area near the “Welcome to New Jersey” sign and I’m not even sure it said “Welcome”. New York hates tourists even more. They didn’t even have up signs indicating where the state line was located. We were glad to see both states in our rear view mirrors. At one point during the day we stopped at a Dunkin Doughnut for coffee and watched the sky explode with rain. It’s supposed to do the same late tonight and thru the day tomorrow. Connecticut had no idea what the definition of a Senic Viewpoint” is as was exemplified by my photo. At least they welcomed us! One thing I was impressed by were the freeway side “Service Centers” in the area. They are designed like rest stops or race car pits. You never really leave the freeway but just enter pullouts for gas, food, bathrooms and convenience store items then hit the acceleration lane right back onto the freeway.

Last night was something else as Adam Goetz and Laura Goetz treated us to a fantastic meal of tostones, ropa vieja, homemade tortillas and yellow rice (look it up). This was complemented by lemon drop martinis, pecan and apple smoked whiskey, Oban 18, Old Pali Road, etc and great company. Today we went to Battlefield Country Store to visit with Trina’s sister and her family the Gydens who live in the Fredericksburg area as well. The family is a wonderful bunch of hard working girls. The store is what you would expect, canned everything, homemade anything and 10 pound boxes of bacon. Next Bob and I visited the Chancellorsville Battlefield National Park and toured a portion of the battlefield. We travelled from there to Harper’s Ferry National Park, saw John Brown’s fort and the remnants of the destroyed armories and waded in the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. We are now in Delaware with half the states covered of our 16 state adventure.

Last night we had no internet so here’s the last 2 days: Yesterday we traveled the rolling hills of eastern Ohio (Highway 250) seeing historic buildings and military memorials. Many of the towns along Highway 250 celebrated their veterans with pictorial banners celebrating their years of service. We traveled thru West Virginia into Pennsylvania then back into West Virginia. Highway 33 was a beautiful twist 2 lane road with beautiful scenery. We found a national forest campground in Brandywine for the night. Just after starting our bonfire for the night a thunderstorm came in and dumped on us for most of the night. I sat in my tent and serinaded myself (according to Bob). Today we traveled into Virginia and through the Shenandoah National Park before arriving at my nephews house for some delicious dinner and great company!

Today we tried to make up some time by jumping on the highways. Mistake number 1. It was hot and boring. Mistake number 2. We stayed on the highways. That resulted in multiple traffic jams including one that was 12 miles long. The most interesting thing we saw was a skink (lizard) at a rest stop. Bob has re-aquired a strong Minnesota accent so I can’t understand a word he says over our helmet speakers (or I need hearing aids). We passed thru Flint, MI and refilled our water bottles then it was on to the next traffic jam. The weather decided that the highways were having all the fun so the clouds elected to dump on us. Campgrounds we’re non-existent so we got another hotel and went to physical therapy in the whirlpool bath for my sore butt and Bob’s sore leg. No more freeways!
