It’s been ten years since the first Open Wide clinic opened its doors to patients in Peronia, Guatemala. On January 21, 2011, several hundred community members and officials showed up for the new clinic inauguration with lines of people around the building waiting to get a look inside. This fanfare and curiosity was surprising to the American volunteers attending that day. But for the town of Peronia, the day was remarkable.

Greetings!

What a year it’s been! All of us at Open Wide are thinking of all of you, our loyal volunteers and donors who have, in one way or another, supported the foundation this year – even while we can’t be in Guatemala due to the pandemic.

The pandemic has effected Guatemala deeply. The tourist industry was greatly impacted, as well as other parts of its fragile economy. Although closed borders keep us apart for now, Open Wide has still been able to provide support to our clinics and staff and the greater community...

We are still touching lives - even when we can’t go - through our Open Wide caries prevention program. Guatemala has one of the highest rates of tooth decay in the developing world. In response, Open Wide has made a sustainable investment in the use of a profoundly successful caries prevention technique called Silver Diamine Fluoride or SDF.

SDF is a solution designed to arrest the development of caries in primary teeth. Thanks to our Open Wide Ambassadors and their leadership in the new field of SDF we have started a SDF program in our Open Wide clinics and in the local schools.

While borders are still closed, Open Wide is working from home to keep the SDF program vital and ready to continue whenever the clinics can open again.

Thanks to this work, a keystone of our prevention efforts in our Open Wide clinics can continue.

Thank you for your support to help us keep our SDF program going - While We Can’t Go!

Over the years, our volunteers have been asking for materials that they can display in their homes, offices and patient waiting rooms. We heard you and we have just finalized the layout of our OWF Photo books, thanks to Shutterfly’s support to our “While We Can’t Go” donor appreciation gift. The books are perfect for volunteers who want to share with their communities their contribution Open Wide’s story over the years and features stunning photos taken by our founders, ambassadors and volunteers.

Take a peek and see if you recognize any of your photos featured:

We are in love with our canvas print that arrived this morning from Shutterfly! Big thanks to Shutterfly for providing these beautiful canvases to support OWF’s “While We Can’t Go” donor appreciation campaign. Thanks also to volunteers Dominique Chagniot and Iriff Keisha for providing the photo from their first Open Wide Youth Scholarship trip.

Volunteers love the shop in Antigua where the photo was taken. Anyone recognize where it’s from?

The Peronia team has come together for a “dress rehearsal” of phase one re-opening procedures to safely provide dental care to their community when clinics open up again. Dr. Stephanie Lambour, clinic director led in developing the protocol based on best practices of COVID guidelines followed by local, national and international dental philanthropy groups. Our OWF Clinic director Dr. Mike Johnson and Ambassador Angela McKinney, RDH were instrumental in preparing Peronia for this training.
We miss the Peronia staff, patients and volunteers and thank everyone who has supported Open Wide in continuing to make a difference “While We Can’t Go”.

So far OWF has raised $2500 to support the critical PPE needs in Guatemala! You can make your contribution here:
